#1 Starter motor spacer necessary for S1 3.8?

Post by ysmalkie » Sat Mar 14, 2020 4:14 pm

I am trying to determine weather I need the starter motor spacer for my S1 3.8. The starter is standard, the Gearbox is moss and the ring gear has 104 teeth.

C22489 Ring Dowel and C22488 spacer seem to be necessary for 4.2, am I correct??

Hi Tadek....is your bell houseing from a 3.8 or a 4.2........a 4.2 will have slightly recessed starter motor bolt holes so the ring dowles fron the spigot plate just sit in them ....the 3.8 holes are just straight drilled.....Steve

Hi Tadek....if its a 3.8 bellhouseing it will have straight drilled holes with no step for the ring dowles.....so you wont need a spigot plate ....note the 3.8 and 4.2 holes are not in the same exact position so you need the correct bellhousing to match the correct starter and flywheel.......this is assuming your useing a standard starter and not a high torque.....Steve

I measured it.
First I measured the distance between the flange on the bellhousing and the ring gear.
Then I measured the throw out of the starter, just by pulling the pinion gear. The throw out was greater than the gap to the ring gear so I needed the spacer.

Mine is a 4.2 but not an E-Type derived engine.

Thanks - I should have checked the PN of the bellhousing before I mounted it.

I also measured it and seems the starter gear clears the ring gear on the flywheel when in the retracted position by few mm.
