OK, I 'm stuck again.

I thought I had it sorted with Denis Welch but the part that arrived is too small on the OD by 1/16"

I need a supplier of the reverse idler bushes for an all synchro 4 speed from a 67 S1.

These as it turns out are different to the non synchro box...who knew?

Bronze bushing : 13/16 id x 1" od x 1 1/64" long.

Thanks in advance.

I reckon you will need to strip and cannibalise another box unfortunately .

Looks like I've found a local engineer who can machine some for me.

Cheers all.

It shouldn't be that difficult.

As long as you use the right material, machining to those dimensions =+/- a thou should be doable.

You need a reliable press fit into the gear, and you have the shaft to measure, so a competent machinist should be able to produce you something that's better than anything that the usuals might sell you.

Just for the exercise I might have a crack at it myself. I'm a bit underemployed during lockdown..

Hello Ben,
The bushes are not just a bronze bush, but a perforated bronze bush. If whoever makes them for you simply turns them out of bronze, they will need to have an internal Oil Track machined, preferably a figure eight groove, otherwise I doubt if the bearing will get sufficient lubricant between it and the shaft it runs on.

You should be able to purchase something close in a Perforated Bronze bush, off the shelf, that can be machined to the correct size. Ensure that whoever machines them, makes allowance for the transfer (to some degree) of the Interference Fit of the OD of the bush with the bore of the Reverse Idler Gear, to the bore of the bush. If its made with the correct running clearance on the shaft before its been pressed into the gear, it may end up tight on the shaft once its been pressed into the gear.

Following are pictures of the typical wear that is found on the Reverse Idler Gear Shaft when refurbishing a Jaguar 4 speed gearbox. If yours are worn at all, replacing the bushes in the gear is only a half baked job; the shaft should also be replaced.

The following picture is of Reverse Idler Gear Shafts I manufacture; a better product than the original, being made of a more suitable material than used in the original and a better fit in the bore of the Gearbox Housing.

Bill

Thanks Bill,

They are being machined internally for the oil track.

He has the shaft and idler so can machine the correct tolerance.

Shaft is in very good order but nice to know you make new ones for our future projects.
