Hi all,
I’m tracking down the oil and fluid leaks as I run in my rebuilt 3.8 engine. There appears to be a slight coolant leak from a blanking plug on the right hand side of the block. I believe this is a heater element blanking plug and it looks like a male hex type bit is needed to tighten it up. Does anyone know the size/type of bit needed?
Blanking plug hex size?

I couldn't agree more with Steve. These plugs are well nigh impossible to remove unless you had it out during the rebuild, and even then it is in one hell of a place to get at. Bars Leaks, 2 bottles, was the standard Jaguar prescription for all new cars !

Looking at the pics from the rebuild, all the core plugs were replaced but the heater plug was in situ.
Bars leaks it is then.

I took the large heater plug out a couple of weeks ago before the block went for machining , it did not want to budge even with a 3ft extension tube. Resorted to using plenty of heat from my trusty superfire2 with mapp gas.
With the engine in situ Richard you are doing the right thing as Christopher and steve suggested.
Its a tapered bsp brass plug with a 5/8" hex socket and quite easy to round off the hex in brass.
