This car belongs to a friend of mine, but I’m the lucky fool who has to maintain it. Whilst waiting for the fan to come on, I realised that I hear a sound which I don’t like.
Its audible all the time in the video but at 16 secs, I turn the phone’s mic towards the oil filler opening and then the suspect sound becomes most audible. There are ticking noises from the cam lifters opening the valves but that is not what I’m worried about.

Hi,
It could be the timing gear chain relaxed and touching to the front cover.
Have a look.

Having removed the tappet cover, it seems there is a lot of play in the top cam chain. I can lift the chain away from the guide about 10mm (3/8").
I recon the first order of business it to do the procedure for tightening the top chain?

I have to say that I can hear no suspicious sounding noise - it sounds quite normal until you remove the cap when it becomes very noisy !
The play in the top timing chain is very large and would easily cause the threshing noise you can hear . I agree entirely that the first thing to do is to adjust the chain tensioner. Note that it is best to equalise the tension on both sides of the chain which involves turning the engine backwards a little way after you have checked the tension on the exhaust side of the chain, and then readjusting to give similar tension on the inlet side

Thanks for the tip!!christopher storey wrote: ↑Wed Oct 07, 2020 6:00 pmNote that it is best to equalise the tension on both sides of the chain which involves turning the engine backwards a little way after you have checked the tension on the exhaust side of the chain, and then readjusting to give similar tension on the inlet side
Adjustment done. Now the chain has much less slack. The locking pin only goes in till its tip is flush with the sprocket it locks onto.
The two holes on the sprocket is 1¼" apart from each other and 3/16" in diameter. (If you have to make a tool Lyons #0013)
Can only test tomorrow after getting a tappet cover gasket.
Note to self. When hearing such funny noise, set the top chain tension first before removing tappet cover.....
