Hi:
I have started disassembly of the engine and a couple of questions.
There are 5 "F" and one "G" stamping on the block beside the cylinders. I assume this was a sizing stamp at assembly?
There are a set of three letters on the block and bearing caps as well as the front cover. Is this the original assembly person who stamped these?

Like you I think that the stamps on the caps are the initials of the engine builder and numbers to identify which cap goes where.

I haven't seen stamping on the head like that.

In a recent thread I found out that the engine number is stamped on the crank in early cars as is shown on yours.

So far the block, head, flywheel and crank all have the same numbers!

The stampings on the block gasket surface face are the piston bore grades. If pistons are original, the same stamping should be found on the piston. Simple method of maintaining correct bore clearance.

Not just early cars Andrew, my 69 S2 has the engine number on the crank, and flywheel too.

I see why it is a good idea to remove the sludge plugs...

All but one cotter pin was still in the castellated nut. So on the rebuild there are 12 point nuts to replace the castellated + cotter pin?

On the main bearing bolts, there is a washer to replace the lock tabs now? The engine stand idea works wonderfully!

Replace all of them with new bolts and nuts.

I see you plan to replace the conrod bearings. Have you replaced the main bearings as well?

They will be replaced as well.
