Hi

Does someone have a helpful diagram of the order of the wires on the distributor cap for a 4.2 S1. I was being careful to replace like for like but have got confused and fear have them wrong. Do they follow the firing order counter clockwise?

I’m sure someone has done this before.

From the workshop manual...

At the moment I have no1 at the bottom right (5 o clock position) followed by no 5 which aligns with the 3 o’clock cap securing clip.

It would be worth following the process in the Engine section of the workshop manual, page B.28. You can find this in the knowledgebase.

Remember the firing order for a six cylinder car is:
Too young, too old, just right

Finally managed to get it right. It wouldn’t run as per the manual, I blew down no 1 and no6 which indicated no 1 was on the compression stroke, so tried 180 degrees out, still wouldn’t run. Finally used a dowel to get 1 &6 at tdc, verified no 1 was on compression and noted the position of the arm which was one place behind the diagram! - 180 -60 degrees away from the manual. Repositioned the Leads and started up first time!

I also found my starter was loose and hence not engaging, tightened the lower bolt and all was well. Do these work loose with vibration over time. I think it’s strange that it was loose
