#1 Original Fabric Gaskets - Pedal box and Bonnet Catch

Post by heritageclassicsltd » Sun Jan 03, 2021 11:12 am

Dear All
Did anyone ever have any success in sourcing a material that replicates the original composite / matirx / fabric style gaskets used as gasket material for example for the bulkhead mounted pedal boxes and blanking plates, and the bulkhead mounted bonnet alignment pin receiving catch brackets.
I don't want to fit the rubber parts which are all I can seem to find.
Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul,
I think the basic material to built them could be thin flat belt

I believe the gaskets were produced by Stephens Gaskets Ltd, an associated company of Stephens Belting Co, 94 Snow Hill, Birmingham. The latter also owned Thor Hammers and as Mich says, the gaskets were made from the similar materials as the belts. Stephens Gaskets Ltd are still in operation but no idea if they will be prepared to cut gaskets for you or supply the correct sheet material: https://www.stephensgaskets.co.uk/gaskets.php

"Stephens Gaskets Limited produces gaskets and shim washers for many manufacturers, both in the UK and outside. Customers range from Classic/Vintage Motor Car and Bikes Clubs, to Diesel Engine manufacturers. As well as, 1st & 2nd tier automotive suppliers and OEMs."

Not the ones above I would suspect, but some original gaskets may well have contained asbestos. Exhaust manifold gaskets for example. Same applies to old brake pads and clutch linings....be careful not to break them up and don't blow old brake dust about.....
