Relay conversion along with the latest generation super-bright halogen bulbs from Phillips or Ring. http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4919

HID will not fit and would not be legal as they require headlamp washers and self levelling suspension. LED's are a similar legal minefield and there is talk of strengthening the existing legislation to outlaw retro fittment completely due to dazzling oncoming drivers. Also the S1 sloped headlamp buckets make fitting of 'upgraded' refelctors and electronic bulbs difficult.

:yeahthat:
I use H4’s with the relay upgrade and they are on a par with my 2005 Audi. Even the mot tester commented on the performance when they did the calibration for me.

I second Richard. Use good quality branded H4 60/55 watt filament bulbs from E.g Bosch or Philips. Don't buy cheap unbranded rubbish from a well known auction site. Don't be tempted to get higher wattage ones unless you have the relay conversion....and even if you do it is not really necessary.

LED bulbs are available but the vast majority either won't fit or will not dip correctly due to incompatibility between the reflector that is designed for a filament H4 and the LED source. And yes, at least one supplier is now selling an LED conversion that will fit but I'd still be dubious about its dazzle when dipped. As David says HID are definitely illegal as the lights don't self level.

I have just "moted" my Serie 1 with LED from "bettercarlighting " and it was good but you have to adjust the bulb rotation with the light triangle on the right side (FRANCE) to avoid dazzling
