!965 S1 4.2 . Hi I am having trouble bolting them together I seem about 6mm short. The engine and box have all the mounts fitted but the rear assembly still needs final tightening . At the moment the front is on axle stands and the rear on pallets under the axle/ suspension . Do you think the prop will move that much when finally tightened.
Another thing does the vacuum fit at an angle on the bulkhead.

1.have you extended the sliding splined joint on the prop shaft ?

2. Yes, at about a 45 degree angle

Do all S1 4.2 prop shafts have splines ?

AFAIK yes, they should do. Perhaps others will comment. Has yours not got a splined joint / Or is it perhaps seized ?

Hi Bryan...yes its just easier to ask....but have you got a service manual and parts catalogue yet...it will help..we even have them in the knowledge base section for use once you have your own copy.....Steve

Tomorrow I will have a look. Should the splined joint be at the front or back. If it does have one it must be siezed . Apart from a big hammer or maybe heat is there anyway of freeind it. Thanks guys. Ps it has been stood over 20 years.

Splines at the front. Gives you around 2 to 3" of movement.

If it is seized you'll need to free it up.

Managed it. Got 2 bolts on fairly tight then a few taps with a big hammer trying not to break anything and it suddenly jumped . Thanks guys . Bryan and on and on .

Hi,

I hate to say this, but really you should consider removing the prop shaft to remove corrosion and grease the sliding joint.

Well , I agree with Simon on this. You perhaps do not need to remove the shaft, but at least withdraw the gaiter and get as much anti seize compound into the joint as possible . Diesel is as good a fluid as any , and then get as much graphite grease in as you can

Ok I had to remove engine UG. We found that the lowest bolt for the water pump had been snapped and we could not get to it through the picture frame . I did not want to risk not doing it the find a water leak when all the engine completed and run. Now drilled out and re tapped . So I will now be able to grease the prop shaft slide joint.
