External door handles?
#1 External door handles?
Couple of questions Re Door handle/locks.
I have done a search and turned up some info, however, still a bit confused with the mention of S1.25 & S1.5 so:
Car is a S1 4.2 2+2 first registered July 66. New doors were purchased, but I am assured they are the same as the originals having only cut outs for fitting the handle. Another however! I seem to remember (30yrs+ memory fade) that the doors had been re-skinned.
Should the external door handle be a push button with the key barrel included in the handle or is it a seperate key assembly?

#2 Re: External door handles?
On my S1 2+2 the handles did not have key holes.
Separate locks were fitted approx 2 inch below the handles.

Hi Steve,
Yes I came across that thread when I did a search, hence my confusion re: S1, S1.25 & S1.5, so far it has been confirmed by two sources as being a sepaerate lock, so we'll see what turns up in the boxes of bits! Luckily, SteveJaguar is only a short distance away from us with the same model so a trip to make a template may be on the cards.

Reference: Jaguar E-Type Six Cylinder Originality Guide, Haddock & Mueller, P-272
The door handle with separate lock configuration appeared with introduction of the 2+2 during Series 1 production for model year 1966 and likely ran up to Series 2 production.
See attached image from the Haddock & Mueller reference.

Thanks Bud,
Jaguar's strange decision making going sepaerate instead of forward with the intergrated handle.

My series 2 2+2 has seperate door locks
Not sure if it is meant to though, as I've seen a lot of series 2 cars that have combined handles and locks
Jaguar did confusing things

#9 Re: External door handles?
The Haddock & Mueller lower photo caption in Item #6 points out that the Series 2+2 handles reverted back to the push button in handle configuration.

#10 Re: External door handles?
Yes I did see that
However my car built 6th Feb 1969 appears to have had seperate locks to the handle
The doors are original and march each other
If you look at 1968 series 1.5 2+2s, some have seperate locks
Over the years I guess a very large amount of cars will have had their doors or door skins replaced due to them being a rust trap
Would you replace the door or skin with a seperate lock type or use the non seperate lock door skins?
And replace the handles?
I can't really think why on my car someone would revert back to the seperate door lock and replace the handles rather than fit the correct skin and or door
Especially both doors
Its odd

#11 Re: External door handles?
I have just checked the relevant period of Service and Spares bulletins for the S2 2+2 cars and cannot see reference to any changes being introduced during the production run re door locks. As such, whatever was introduced at day 1 should hold. I've also looked at the brochures for the introduction of the S1 2+2 and the S2 cars and these show a separate lock on the S1 and no separate lock on the S2 (photo below is from the brochure for the S2 2+2).

#12 Re: External door handles?
I would tend to agree with you
I also couldn't find any series 2 2+2 cars with a seperate lock
Although I couldn't find many early cars pictures
Its really odd my car has them
I suppose someone may have replaced the the door skins with pre series 2 ones and changed the handles and locks
Seems strange to go that route though
The doors themselves appear to be original but again I suppose they may have been changed, its possible,
The paint on the doors match the rest of the car, same colour and with original stickers/decals etc

Mine is a '69 2+2 and has push button in handle locks. Pretty sure they are original.
