#1 Tyres advice please.

Post by johnben » Mon Apr 26, 2021 7:00 am

Hi Folks
My Avon Radial 185 R15 93H are cracking up after many years service and need replacing. I do not have enough years left to read all the comments re tyres on the forum. My needs are simple, the car will not be doing much in the way of milage or be subject to racing etc.
I would prefer the tyres made in the UK and look right for the car as well as carrying out their main purpose. I would appreciate any advice given.
Thanks
John

I have had XVS on my OTS for years and they are superb, but expensive. I run that car with 30/35 psi f/r and I could not understand why the FHC with the Dunlop's has such poor handling. I was using 32/32psi with the Dunlop's but after a conversation with Dougal he said I should be using 38/38psi and that transformed the car.

There was a comparison done by a magazine (Autobild Klassik) some time ago, albeit with a Healey. Avon and Blockley were below par. I can confirm that my Avons were no good on wet surfaces. Dunlop was top in this test. Vredestein and Dunlop are almost half the price of Pirelli and Michelin. I bought a set of Dunlop classic sport recently, but have not yet driven them. Received good reviews, but look modern. It seems that Vredesteins are a good compromise regarding performance, looks and price. Mind the speed rating, Etypes usually need V.

I have the Vredestein Sprint Classic 185 VR15 91V that are rated to 149mph. I got them delivered for £149 each.

They have a fairly plain, rounded sidewall which suits the chrome wires and looks nicely period I think. Probably not as ‘original’ looking as the the Cinturato’s, but they are twice the price.

There’s a lot of writing on the wall!

Apart from the make and model already noted, this is most of the other info...

I have Nankook RC-001 tyres fitted to 2 of my 3 cars. Michelin XVS clone. So a modern copy of a totally outdated, technically deficient and probably highly dangerous tyre design.

Now when I posted about them last year everyone was prepared to slag them off, despite not actually having any experience with them. The usually keyboard warrior bullshit.

But having had them on one, and now 2 cars, I really like them.

Lovely light steering, surefooted, comfortable and quiet. And you can buy a set of 4 for the price of 1.5 of the other offerings.

Realistically you're never going to drive your E type at the limit of any tyre you might fit. Especially these rubber dinosaurs. So why pay a ludicrous amount for a "classic" tyre when you can buy the same thing for 40% of the price and get the same outdated performance?

Well considering Michelin were the first company to produce radial tyres i very much doubt they sell poor quality modern versions of their classic range
I would prefer to trust them than a modern copy from somewhere in the far East
Each to their own I suppose
And the xvs was designed originally as I remember for the DS range of citerons specifically for high speed directional stability

Thanks Richard , Vredestein have added one ply of nylon to the tread to lift H to a V rating .

I have been using Blockley for a number of years now with no problems , I have fitted them to MK1 & MK2 as well as XK120's .
Andrew makes a good point at the end of his post .
MWS can supply you with most makes of tyres but they say they supply more Blockley than anything else .
