#1 Dipstick locater / bracket

Post by inner pickle » Sat May 01, 2021 11:39 am

Hi Guys and Gals,

I've had a little perusal / search of this message board and messaged a few contacts - so far without any clarification, any input very welcome....

my engine was recently refurbished and only recently when being returned to the car was the question of the dip stick locator/guide pipe considered. Mine was missing.

A quick look on the SNG Barratt site revealed a small "spout" / adaptor reference C17522. This has a slight chamfered edge to enable placement into the block and the dipstick fits in accordingly.

Got to say I was expecting something more - this is about 2" long - the diagram indicates something far longer until you look closer you can maybe interpret the drawing as showing the dipstick too?

Anyhow, it's in the block all 2" of it.

Far be it from me to be critical BUT is this really correct?

In which case a quick look around ( there's no picture in Clausager's reference book ) shows a small bracket ( in my Haynes Manual ) but not in the Barratt spares listing.

So, in summary, I'm guessing the 2" spout is correct, but a guide bracket?
I think this is required, the slightly angled dipstick is tall and somewhat ungainly without one.
In which case where can I source one?

Questions, questions, questions....sorry.

John

My series 2 has a guide bracket which is fitted behind the bulkhead end exhaust manifold bolt. Holds the dipstick nice and securely. Don't know where to source one, but wouldn't be hard to make one up. I'd post a pic, but haven't got the facility at the moment!

I only fit in a 2+2, so got one!

The tube pushes in flush with the block.....the bracket at the top to hold the dipstick is available from the usuals...on SNG site look at exhaust manifold section...it fits under one of the nuts.....if you had just googled E type dipstick bracket plenty of images would come up.....Steve

:yeahthat:

Also, the manifold mounting stud that it fixes to should be longer than the others to allow for the bracket. On my engine (3.8) the bracket is on the last but one manifold stud.

Stuart

If you can't make it work, make it complicated!

The longer dipstick stud in the head is to accommodate a small spacer distance piece C19706 -- the 4.2 has 5, 1 on the dipstick bracket ,2 on the gearbox breather ,2 on the alternator heat shield

This is mine after re-painting and prior to the dipstick being put into place. Behind the bracket is a thicker washer than on the other studs:
