Hello All,

I've been asked to look at a car that was owned by the deceased father of a friend.

It is a late Series 1 FHC from 1964. Superficially, it looks to have the Moss box (reverse on the gear knob is left and forward) and bellows brake servo. The dash centre panel and console are black vinyl and not aluminium.

The question concerns the badging on the rear door; it is identical to my 4.2 except it is badged 3.8, reading on three lines:

E-TYPE
JAGUAR
3.8

To this point I had understood that 3.8 litre cars wore a single "JAGUAR" badge on the rear, with no further designation and so this made me curious.

Does anyone have any further information on this please ?

My understanding is that this is sometimes done when a car undergoes restoration

It is certainly a non-standard modification . No 3.8 ever carried any badging on the boot/tailgate other than
"Jaguar"

Is it possibly a replacement rear hatch that came from a 4.2 and instead of filling the holes someone wanted to show it was a 3.8?
Out of interest, do you want to share what is wanted of your look at this car? Valuation or similar for it to be sold? Just wondering if another person could give a professional viewpoint, not knowing your own experience so no insult meant.

Generally I tend to agree, but remembering vague that I read somewhere that there have been exceptions?!

Not sure about local specification or any other reason. In any case, it can be found too often to be pure random of an individual modification - imho.

It's generally accepted that the 3.8 cars just say Jaguar on the rear. As a previous poster has suggested it may have acquired a rear hatch from a 4.2 so they added the extra as the holes were there.
The very last handful of 3.8 cars just may have had a vinyl dash...I do recall reading somewhere that, as jaguar often did, when a subtle change happened and a parts bin was empty they would use bits from the upgrade just to finish off the last of the old....certainly happened with the 'series 1.5' cars....and a few 3.8's may possibly have had 4.2 centre dash panels factory fitted...technically the 3.8 remained available after the 4.2 went into production but in reality no more 3.8 cars emerged one 4.2 litre cars started coming off the line....David (heuer) will provide the definitive answer....

The `64 FHC I used to have ( now sold - sob ) had the black vinyl dash cover ( no alloy bits ) . I`m sure it was original .

My ‘64 OTS (build-date = Feb. 12, 1964) also has the black vinyl covered dash and console (and no boot badge other than “Jaguar”).

There is no evidence to suggest the Factory used the E-Type script or 3.8 model designation on the boot or hatch of the 3.8 cars..

Thank you all for your observations and Geoff, I'm certainly not insulted by the suggestion that somebody else might know more than me - I'm very much a happy amateur in present company !
The car in question is going to be sold eventually. I was asked to have a look to give a guestimate about its condition and value, both for probate purposes and for the eventual sale.
It has sat unmoved and untouched for at least eleven years and so I was pleasantly surprised that it rolled forward and that the engine turned (by hand with the bores pre-lubricated).
It is in very good/excellent condition (although it will certainly need re-commissioning) and the reason for the curiosity re: the boot badge is that the late owner had a small jaguar collection including, as I am informed, a multi-concours winning 420. This led me to wonder whether my previous sketchy knowledge of e-type insignia might have been lacking but it now looks as though perhaps it was a restoration modification.
I shan't be able to see the car again for several weeks but when I do I'll take some photos and post them here.

I have a 3.8 OTS built in November 1963 (880568) and originally delivered to the USA. There is no boot badge presently on the car and no holes presently drilled in the bootlid. I'd like to go with an original badge and not a reproduction.

For my badge, I should have "JACUAR" and nothing else, but as I understand it, there are several iterations of the 3.8 "JACUAR" badge with subtle differences.

There is apparently an original one on eBay right now. Is this EXACTLY correct for me, best you can tell?

So I did a little more research on this including checking my well-worn copy of the totally awesome Haddock/Meuller Originality Guide. It looks like the very-early 3.8's had a flatter-profile "JACUAR" badge and the rest of the 3.8's had a rounded-profile "JACUAR" badge.

The badge pictured over the light-blue paint is a badge I have access to for use on my car. If it cleans up well enough, or I re-chrome it, is there any reason why I should not use this one on my car?

These badges are generally made of “zamak” also called “mazak” or pot metal. Some chroming companies may say they can not be re-chromed others will say they are happy to try but with no guarantees as it is a difficult material to re-chrome. Find a company you are happy with and see what they say. Several of us in the UK have found companies who’ve done a very good job on it.

I have to drill a couple of holes to mount a new "JAGUAR" badge on a painted 3.8 roadster deck-lid.

Obviously it sits centrally on the panel.

However does anyone have the dimension from the bottom edge of the lid to the bottom of the badge please?

I can figure out where the holes go from there.

How come the original holes are not already present. have they been filled? Sorry I can't help as my car is in storage, I am sure someone will chime in not before long.

I fitted a new one and they come un-drilled. I binned my old one a couple of years ago, so now I dont have a reference.

My 64 OTS has the badge sitting 7” above the boot lid bottom edge.
