Crayon type for car number bulkhead markings?

This may be a dumb question, but what's the type of crayon that was used for marking on the bulkhead?
Pastel oil crayon?..
Wax crayon?

My kids have a variety, and I am not sure what to choose... ;-)

I think that, back in the day, they would have used a Chinagraph pencil.

Here is another one: low mileage 1E 32725 FHC '66

The body number on my 63 fhc was under the rear hatch trim. Yellow crayon.
Also, behind the speedo/rev counter dash, there was the body number in black pencil.

I dont think its really the "done thing" to be putting in you own crayon markings.....these are to show originality...puting in your own will create a "false" impression......what would you think if you purchased a car and later found out that a previous owner had crayoned in body numbers/dates/signitures ..........Steve

If it looks like it was a wax pencil, then a chinagraph pencil suits the description. These were certainly around in the late 60s and early 70s as I used to have one in my old box of pencils.

Having said all that, anyone who claims to be a restorer and hands back to a client a car painted in 2pack paint, is probably guilty of far more than someone who scribes a few numbers which can be rubbed off. Just imagine if the Mona Lisa were given a nice big repro smile repainted in acrylic paint with "SNG Leonardo B" neatly stamped into the picture frame.

Perhaps conservation should become the new restoration.
