Hi - I am new, how do I get my speedo to be more accurate? It is very jumpy and only gives the speed to the nearest 30mph!! Makes it very difficult going through speed cameras!

Thanks

First thing to do is check the speedo cable for smooth rotation after cleaning and greasing the inner. Undo it at the speedo end and withdraw the inner. Don't apply too much force and if it will not come with a good pull with a pair of pliers you will have to remove the outer as well. Its lower end goes into the right hand rear corner of the gearbox where there is a 90 degree angle drive . It is also worth unscrewing this ( very fine thread so be careful) and checking that it too rotates smoothly . If neither of these are a problem, then your trouble lies within the instrument itself , and you are best sending it off to someone like Speedograph Richfield for overhaul

Chris, I always thought you oiled and not greased the cable?

"A blob of grease"
Ref. Service Manual Section P: Electrical & Instruments Page 53,
it actually states not to use oil!

Ah, there you go then! My old memory remembered something about oil!

You shouldn't see any needle wobble at all.

It is almost certainly the cable. If the cable is perfect then it's probably the speedo drive gear (attached to the transmission).

A lot of people do in fact use oil, but the problem with that is that even if you only lubricate the lower two-thirds , it tends to work its way up the cable by capillary action and either penetrate the instrument or drip on your trousers ( or both) !

Or in my case, drip into the warning bulb holders, create a gooey mess and stop them working.:(
