Alternator Regulator

Hello All

I have a 3 spade connector alternator regulator on my series 1 4.2 ots. I can detect the field connect (at both ends) as the cable diameter is different and therefore easily traceable as correctly connected to alternator. However, the positive and negative connections are not so easy to follow. I have just blown up a new regulator which would leave me to believe that I can now identify positive and negative by the error. Is there an easy method of testing which connections are which? I am not very good with electrics but I think I could just about use a voltmeter if I know what I am looking for.

Richard, I assume you are talking about the 4TR. If you look closely at it, you should see it marked on the unit +/-. Looking at photo of my car (Im away at the moment) as you look at the unit, it should be wired Brown/Purple,Black, Brown/Green.
