Two ear wheel spinners?
#1 Two ear wheel spinners?
I am thinking of purchasing a set of new wire wheel spinners for the original wire wheels on my series 1. I see many suppliers offering sets of four as two pair. I remember reading some grumbles about the quality of reproduction wire wheel spinners. My original spinners fit very well and i do not have any wheel balance problems. The spinners are just scruffy after 55 years use.
I wonder if any of you have experience of these from the many suppliers who seem to be offering them. They seem to range in price from £165 to over well over £200 for the set. Is there any difference in quality or are they all from the same manufacturer?
Any recommendations as to quality gratefully received.

Get yours tidied up, dressing out any dings and get them re-chromed if they are original and aren’t too messed about from hammer blows. A good chrome company will do all that for you. The cost will not be dissimilar to buying new, not guaranteed to fit, spinners.

Avoid repro spinners, they are the wrong shape, weigh 1/2lb more (each), have the wrong shaped Jaguar logo and are badly machined. They can be difficult to tighten up causing knocking and are a por match t the hub of original wheels.

Hi
Definitely get your old mashed up ones sorted …can cost a very little more than “repro” ones but they are correct, will fit and will have correct lettering(which should NOT be painted but left chrome AND the longer skinny arrow. Mine were horrible but Derby Plating did the whole job, got the smooshed bits/dents sorted and they are perfect. If the arrow etc is looking like disappearing under chrome they can recut them but mine were fine.
You will not be disappointed by Derby Plating
My wife always comments on the repro spinners on the big resto companies cars…they are almost NEVER originals which always seems like a shame!

While as David says there have been problems with remanufactured spinners in the past I can tell you that we have fitted a number of new sets of spinners to restorations over the last 10 years without problems.
For the restoration business we usually bought from David Manners, although I deal more often with SNGB for my own stuff, simply because their website is superior.
I most recently bought a set from SNGB for my Mk2 and these seem fine.
While getting yours repaired maintains originality it will take some time (my chromer averages 2 months) and you'll not have any spinners.
Were I you I would buy a set from the usuals on the proviso that if they are no good you can return them.
Then send yours off for repair.

Mind Took 4weeks to do.
Where do you reside Lester?
If it’s winter and you’re not driving then it may be a good time to get them sorted

Thanks very much for your advice, everyone.
There is a chroming company very close to me in Kent.
I am unlikely to be using the E much over next few months so this is the ideal time to have the original set restored.

#8 Re: Two ear wheel spinners?
I recently had my set of original circa-1964 A-B spinners restored here in New Jersey for U.S. $80 each (not very helpful for those of you in Old Blighty, I know, but this may prove useful to the Yanks on this forum):
The name and address of the shop is:
MARA POLISHING & PLATING
105 W. PEDDIE ST.
NEWARK, NJ 07112
(973) 242-0800
maraplater105@verizon.net
They provided a quick turnaround and even gave me a price quote based on a detailed photo sent to them by email.
I was very happy with the results.
They also do aluminum polishing on things such as E-type cam covers.
