Exhaust question/recommendations
#1 Exhaust question/recommendations
Hi chaps,
Long time. Happy New Year all.
Finally a few years on managed to complete the restoration of my S1 3.8. After doing a nut and bolt and getting it to exactly how it left the factory I decided to fit a 5sp box.
Finally I want to address the exhaust tone, whilst the original sounds nice, I would like it a bit louder.
Any recommendations for the 3.8?
Any sounds clips?

Jonny, out of interest how far have you driven the car at motorway speeds? Many owners soon wish for less noise after a while if going for any distance. Just a thought to consider before you plan on a louder system.

I have an FHC with the standard ( stainless ) exhaust , and an OTS which is rather louder without being excessively noisy. Although the OTS sound is pleasing for a short period , it soon becomes tiring at continuous engine speeds in excess of 2500 rpm

Hi Geoff,
Drove it from Coventry to London a few weeks back.
I'm used to quote a lot of noise, most of my other cars either have thumping V8s or screaming V8s.

Well Jonny, it’s your hearing. Search on here for stainless exhausts to get thoughts, there have been some advertised for sale by people changing back to standard.
How about giving a bit of update on what you’ve done and photos of the finished car? Always good to see another E back on the road.
Have fun
Geoff

Thanks. Will take a look.
Was completed during first lockdown of 2020, unfortunately not much time and only managed to use it the past couple of weeks. Will get some photos up over the weekend.

SNGB etc sell a Bell stainless system with a "sports" muffler.
I have one in my 3.8 OTS and it is good and loud over 3000 rpm.

Hello Jonny,
I think it may have been David Jones, in a Thread some time ago, stating along the lines:
"When posing in an E Type, you should be seen and not heard."
Regards,
Bill

The Bell stainless sports system ( straight through middle boxes ) seems to be the best value ATM . I went for the polished version ( only a few quid more ) and it`s very shiny , shame you can`t see it when it`s fitted . It`s a bit louder than standard , but not unbearable . The tone is thinner and higher pitched than mild steel , but this might be improved by fitting mild steel resonators .
The only downside for me , was the welding on some of the pipes was clumsy and I had to grind off some raised bits before it would fit .

Ah, yes.
I so very much wanted a Renault 21 or Fuego Turbo back in the day. Bizarrely, I never really fancied a 5 GT Turbo though.
I know someone that still has a 21 Turbo.
Regards

#15 Re: Exhaust question/recommendations
Hi gents. Can anyone recommend a quiet exhaust system. I have an SNG Barrett stainless system on a S1.5 OTS and would like less noise for longer trips.
Thanks,
Frederick

Steve,
I guess I don't know which one I have. When I bought it, maybe 2016, the big bore was the only other option I recall. So I could have either of the other two I suppose.
Thanks,
Fred

I don’t know if any of these are still available: I have one of these for my 2+2 restoration which is not yet complete - https://www.abarth-exhausts.com/jaguar/ .
David Jones covers it in the Upgrades section. It is made in mild steel and I there’s a sound file or YouTube video with sound on the page I’ve linked to above.
I paid around €800 plus shipping from the Netherlands. Nowadays, there might also be duty to pay, of course…

EDIT Looking at the site, the end pipes seem to be available but not the full system.

#19 Re: Exhaust question/recommendations
The quietest system I believe, is the original system which is available new direct from Jaguar under their Classic Parts banner.
Yes, it's made from mild steel and it won't last forever like a stainless system but it is quiet and is as original.
I have it fitted to my car and it was so quiet that I chose to liven it up a bit by converting the centre sections to straight through.

I wonder if anyone has tried fitting something like Dynamat to the cooler areas of the system to dampen the acoustics.
