#1 SI 3.8 fuel sytem revision

Hello,
After a very long storage period, I would like to overhaul my FHC as far as necessary and prepare her for road approval. I started with the fuel system, cleaning the well preserved fuel tank and the fuel line system. The carburetors have already been revised. I would like to know, if I can keep the original plastic fuel lines, which come from the carburetors and end at the fuel tank? These lines are not damaged or leaking. My second question is. Which fuel pump should I install that can run without an additional fuel pressure reducer? I prefer a submersible unit and if possible would like to install an original Lucas one, but I think it will be difficult to find one.
Many thanks for your help
John

The fuel lines are not plastic but are nylon, and unless they are unusable I would not advising changing them. You do not state whether your car is a 3.8 or a 4.2 : if it is a 3.8 then the original pump was a submersible. If it is a 4.2 then it is the standard type SU pump which is readily available ( as are spares ) from Burlen Fuel Systems

Hello Chistopher,
Thank you for your reply. Yes the car is a 1961 3.8 one.

The Lucas units do come up on EBay etc from time to time.
I have the SNGB aftermarket unit in both of my 3.8s.

Amazingly, a submersible pump is advertised for sale in the latest JEC magazine. I shall get the phone no and post it up shortly
EDIT ; THE PHONE NUMBER IS 07899 841453 ( from outside the UK 0044 7899 841453 )
The submersible pump requires no pressure regulator

Thank you Andrew,
Does the fuel pump run without an additional pressure reducing valve or other changes to the fuel system?
Bets regards
John

I’ve also got one of the sng submersible pumps. In fact, I’ve had two as the first worked a too high a pressure so I sent it back. They sent another, advising it was set to the correct pressure, but it still pumped out at over 5psi, causing flooding and overflowing of the carbs. I’ve had to fit a Malpassi fuel regulator to get it to the correct pressure. This was covered in a number of posts on this forum.
Don’t fit one unless you have a fuel pressure gauge to check it is correct and prepare to fit a regulator to be on the safe side.

Yes. Unlike Richard I've had no problems.

My 64 is running fine on the original lucas submerged pump. If you have your original pump for a core you can obtain a rebuilt unit for less than US 400.00 on Ebay from a reputable source in the US.

I have two spare original pumps in running order complete with mounting frame and pick up 'pig tail'. Both need a top cover seal as I have not been able to access any . I would sell both for £200
each if anyone wants one. I have another for my 3.8 rebuild. To anyone who does not know - original pumps work very well with few problems (at least to me)

Hello,
Thank you for your information.
I would like to ask if it is possible to install a nos lucas submersible fuel pump in the fuel tank without further preparation or should the pump be opened and replacing all the seals and gaskets ? Are these seals for the pump housing and the sealing rings inside the pump available somewhere ? Does anyone have photos of a disassembled, later FL2 Lucas pump, showing the internal structure and components ? Myself I have driven a petrol-injected Triumph for many years. Here I was able to install a nos Lucas (not submersible) pump and also nos sealing rings and valves in the PI metering unit without revision. After more than 20 years, these components are working perfectly.
Best regards
John

Hello,
Here some photos from the original 1961 Lucas fuel pump, which stood in the full petrol tank for more then 42 years.
Best regards
