#1 Lower Steering Column Removal

Post by Mad River » Mon Jan 24, 2022 4:58 pm

Howdy all. I'm refreshing the rubber seals on the steering column housing (the cast piece next to the brake/clutch cylinders that the lower steering column fits through). I'm curious if one can remove the lower steering column while the bonnet is on. My thought was to disconnect the lower steering column from the steering rack, and then push the column (gently) into the passenger compartment until it clears the frame members, and then take it out to the side. Anyone done this? Advice is greatly appreciated.

Yes you can do this but you need to remove the upper steering column and lower the lower column forward through the picture frame.

Thanks Barrie, I'll give it a shot. Sounds like a two-person job. I'll have to see if my spouse is willing to lend a hand.

BTW, nice to see someone else who has a vintage military Jeep - I've got a 1952 M38A1. Cheers.
