File Transfer Protocol? Feel the pain? Fried the pin?

Yours or a customer’s?

Someone downloaded trouble there for sure. Always better a shade too slack than too tight.

My car and fortunately I was driving it. No real noise, but noticed a vibration through the steering and then nasty grinding noises within a mile or so.

This car has only done 1200 miles since I did a ground up on it. Timkin bearing. I'm usually pretty generous with grease and I subscribe to your bearing tightness views as well.

It was an original stub axle and I wonder whether it was a bit worn and the bearing was able to spin and heat up, melt the grease and then run dry.

Anyway, new stub axle time.

That's nasty.

Do any of you guys use Bearing Fit, such as Loctite 641, when assembling wheel bearings?

Might not be a complete cure for this kind of thing but it will reduce the possibility of the bearing fretting on the spindle.

Regards

Well worth looking at bearing spacers and setting them up with shims....Steve viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17076&p=139986&hili ... ef#p139986

Failure To Proceed. Because classic British cars do not "break down".

Yeah I agree, although they're incredibly expensive from the usuals for what they are.

I'm considering making some myself, so if anyone has a set I'd love to know the dimensions, especially the length.

They a standard on Austin Healey 100 BN1 and Sprite.

If you find the dimensions, I could measure you the ones from Sprite. Maybe they will fit?
They can't be too expensive..

E type front bearing spacer £20 + vat https://www.bighealey.co.uk/front-wheel ... g%20spacer

I would actually double check if it's for an e-type. It could be just as well for a Healey.

That's more reasonable. SNGB want £160 for a pair plus bearings and shims. A pair of new stub axles is under £80.

Nothing wrong with standard setup used on every Jag until 1996. They only swapped to deep groove cartridge type ball bearings to cut servicing costs during warranty period and because tight tolerances were needed to prevent tram-lining once they started using 18” or bigger wheels. Many parts became ‘sealed for life’ but non-serviceable means expensive replacement and dealer fitting or special press and spanner tools for enthusiasts later.
Bearing spacers need careful shimming and are fine for rear hubs, or carrier lower fulcrums etc. with equal opposed bearings torqued tight. Easy to get wrong. Provided a correct D- hole washer is fitted over the D-section threads you have a stable front axle setup. The spacer system sold for fronts are for added stub axld stiffness I assume, but who here is going to claim they drive so hard they need stiffer axles like the two ton XJ?

Bearing fit is fine on the bigger inner race but is for looseness, not over tightness..

The 1992-96 XJ and probably earlier, used a 12 point castellated pressing over a plain nut to give a more precise split-pin and bearing adjustment.

Does that pressing and nut fit the e type axle?

Yes the nut and pressing fit as far as my memory goes. The pressing replaces the castellations, so works with a plain nut, but I think the nut and bearings are the same from Series 3 XJ (1979?) up to the end of X300/X305 production in 1996.

Follow up on this.

I replaced the stub axle and put in Timken bearings. Carefully set up so that the hubs spin freely (took out brake pads) and had a tiny but noticeable amount of rock on the disc.

I replaced the driver's side bearings as well. What was in there looked OK but was "no name" brand. I set it up the same as the LH.

Will see how it goes.

I'm not sure what went wrong, but I'm leaning towards user error.

When I built the car I built the front suspension and brakes on the bench and then (much later) mounted them onto the body when I got it. I don't recall checking the bearings again although I must have split pinned them at some time. I suspect I did them up too tight at assembly and didn't rectify this later.
