#1 Where's the car no?

Post by Allrand » Tue Apr 05, 2022 12:17 pm

Is there anywhere else (other than the pcture frame & data plate) that the chassis no / car no would be stamped on a series1?

Thanks Danny, I have the body no, I was asking about the chassis no (called the car no on the data plate) or VIN.

I pretty sure those are the only two places..certainly on a S1
The 4figure “body number” can be found in all sorts of places …IMHO it is often the more genuine identifier. ie front frames can be restamped and data plates re made

On early S1 3.8, the number was also stamped on one of the bonnet reinforcement plates. Also, a number (can’t remember if it was chassis or body) was stamped behind rear number plate on the panel.

Thanks for all the replies, my car had been badly shunted on the RHS prior to my ownership, the front frame had been replaced and there was no data plate. I have a heritage certificate which confirms what the original chassis no was & the engine, gearbox and body no's all match. I was hoping to find proof of the VIN elsewhere for registration purposes.

All you need to find is what car it was in the production with the correct two digit prefix whether its FHC/OTS, LHD/RHD and you will have the full chassis number.

Thanks to all of you, yes I have all the numbers, just having to jump through a lot of hoops to convince the authorities here because in the absence of a VIN & data plate the police here had allocated what they call a Code 3 no, I'd obviously like to get that changed to the original factory VIN no. It's a 64 3.8 so there's no VIN on the bonett frame.
