Dear John,

The mechanism travel is controlled by a small cog and large semi cirrcular gear. If it jumps, then it is because the teeth on the gear are beyond working tolerance.

You options are:-
1/ replace regulator - cost circa ?160;
2/ mig weld some metal onto the the bad teeth and Dremel off the excess - cost ?0;
or,
3/ get a second hand regulator.

I tried 2/ but had too many teeth to recut and so purchased a regulator from a Mk2 Jag. I then cut out a portion of semi-circle and tack welded it into the correspondingly bad segment of the semi-circle. Cost - ?26

If you are very smart, you might get away with cutting out three or four teeth from one end of the semi-circle and tack welding them into the middle as the "travel" is not a full 180 degrees at the bottom of the range.

kind regards
Marek

John, the regulator is stuck to the channel using a thin rubber. I would use something like sikoflex to glue it back.

I think there is a misunderstanding here, and that the rollers on the regulator are jumping out of the channel whilst the window is lowered. It is hard to say what is causing this, but it could be that the window frame is not properly secured at the bottom - there should be 2 brackets, 1 forward and 1 at the rear of the frame , securing the frame arms to the base of the door . These quite often break or are out of adjustment, thus allowing the channel to exert sideways pressure on the rollers

The rollers are sprung loaded and it is pretty fiddly trying to align the rollers and compress the spring part. Essentially the rollers fit in the channel as you would expect and the spring element keeps them there.

It is possible that your regular has a broken spring thereby allowing the rollers to pop out the channel.

I discovered this when I incorrectly fitted the regulator to the glass and the symptoms were just as you describe. Of course I could be wrong about your car. It just sounds similar.

Hi Chris thanks for your advice. I didnt take the car apart so what i have is the window regulator that just sits under the window channel and nothing is holding them together i must be missing the rollers.

Maybe these pictures help...

Its not so much a roller as a round protrusion. These are photos of a brand new regulator that is waiting to go into my drivers door as I just cant get the original one to work properly - the window glass drops (about an inch) and is fine all the way down but then winds up at a funny angle. I can see that the teeth are VERY worn on my original and I just cant seem to fix it so I decided to put my hand in my pocket.

Anyway....

In the first 2 pictures you can see the spring mechanism...

In the last one you can see the round protrusion (or roller as we are all calling it). ONLY the round protrusion goes into the window runner and the sprung bracket then presses against it.

What I am thinking is that *perhaps* the springs are weak or broken.

Oh..... by the way the only way I have found of fitting the regulator into the window channel is as follows:

* unbolt the window frame from the door. Not forgetting the brackets at the bottom!

* Lift the window frame up about 2".
* Wind the window up as far as it will (almost) go
* with the window frame loose you now have a little bit more wriggle room to get the 'rollers' into the channel whilst compressing the springs. Its bl**dy fiddly I can tell you, but the job gets easier the more often you do it (ask me how I know...) Expect to have to do it several times but you will know when you get it right :shock:

no problem - post any questions you have in this thread and I will do my best to answer them. YOu should know though that I am not an expert - merely someone who learned everything the hard way :)
