#1 Synchro gearbox stick question

Post by andrewh » Mon Jun 27, 2022 7:08 pm

Just stripping my syncro gearbox stick mechanism and I see the stick is held in place by some sort of clamp each end of the metallistic bush. Previously I had an issue with sticks rotating and even coming out even with the nut in place on the bottom although the parts list doesn’t list a washer under it so not too sure what the nut actually down unless it expands the bush to grip . Anyone know what’s going on here please and whether this clamp
Affair I have on this box is a home bodge or original ?

Ok so looking more closely at the stick assembly today, its obviously a bodge to make the stick stop rotating and/or not coming out of the assembly. Can someone enlighten me please as to what would normally stop the stick being able to be pulled up and also to stop it from rotating on a synchro box?

thanks Andrew

Thanks Steve. I have seen this, on the SNG Barratt website however they critically dont show the bottom washer ! I would post it but dont recall how to post photos its been such a long time, please remind me if you will. I suspect that as the rubber bushes lose structure they allow the gear stick to rotate . The clamp affair I had on mine is clearly a home effort to limit the stick from rotating. If the rubber was strong and there was a washer on the bottom of the stick this would have the effect of swelling the rubber in item 66 providing the necessary grip. Over time that would start slipping allowing the stick to rotate.

Add photos......Either click on the blue P at the bottom of the editor screen to add a photo or upload your photos to a free image host -the prefered favourite is IMGUR https://imgur.com/ - and then copy/paste the BBCode link into your post. Very simple and a good way of organising your photos. You can also post several photos in one go.

Hi Andrew

From memory of mine…washer was larger diameter than the bush..probably 20-25MM..and a decent thickness..min 1mm at least…..and did indeed compress the rubber bush when tightened..castle nut on the bottom plus split pin to secure
Splines on gear lever will stop stick from rotating

Hope that helps
