#1 Alternator Wiring

Hi Gents,

I have an alternator with built-in regulator (ACR) fitted to my Series 1 4.2 OTS. Also, I have a Battery Voltage gauge fitted instead of the Ammeter.

Can any kind owner help me out with how these two units are wired into my new Autosparks loom. Autosparks supplied an Alternator Wiring Harness with their "kit" but all wiring diagrams I have found show how the alternator is wired using a separate regulator - none show how to wire it where the regulator is integral to the alternator itself. :helpsos:

Your wise advice and guidance would be most welcome. :fingerscrossed:

Many thanks and kind regards,

George

It'll be wired exactly the same way as on any normal car.

There will be a very thick (capable of 60amps or more) wire to the battery, perhaps via the terminal (distribution) post. Make sure the alternator and battery eyelets are right next to each other and not on separate sides of the bolt. (Make sure the starter motor eyelet is next to the battery eyelet also.)
There will be an earth strap (also capable of 60amps) to the chassis or frame.
There will be a single wire to the red ignition light on the dash. The other side of this will be a white wire direct to the ignition switch.

Take a look at a s3 wiring diagram and collapse the alternator and regulator into one item and you get the idea.

kind regards
Marek

Hi Merek,

Many thanks for your very speedy reply.

I'll look for a S3 wiring diagram and try to work from there.

Thanks so much :thankyouyellow:

Kind regards,

George

Hi Merek,

Just downloaded a S3 wiring diagram and regretfully, not only does the wiring of the alternator show a separate regulator but also an ignition warning light switch which was deleted from the early S1 !

I'll keep trying anyway and hopefully a forum member will be able to give me a wiring diagram for me to follow.

Thanks again,

George

Hi David and many thanks for replying.

I have posted a picture of my alternator showing the connections available. Can you assist further in how I should connect this up and which wires go where?

Also, I will fit a Battery Voltage gauge instead of the Ammeter. Am I right in saying that all I need to do regards the Ammeter wires is just connect them together/

I look forward to your valuable comments.

Kindest regards,

George

Hi, I can’t help you with the alternator wiring as mine was done buy a specialist. I did the voltmeter conversion and yes you disconnect the wires from the ammeter and connect them safely together taking care to properly insulate that junction. Then just connect the voltmeter to a switched 12V supply and a ground. You can either use a Smiths or Lucas one, I used a Smiths using the glass and bezel from the original ammeter. Hope this helps.
