#1 Crash Padding Assemblies on Cantrails

Post by Series1 Stu » Wed May 19, 2021 10:49 am

Hi

I am looking for the foam padding that goes on the crash padding assemblies on the cantrails on my early(ish) 3.8 FHC. It has the type that run to the rear hatch, rather than the later ones that wrap around the rear quarterlight.

Can anybody suggest a source for these please? I have spoken to BAS, who supplied my trim kit, but they say they don't supply them.

I have the metal carriers all painted up and ready to go and I have the vinyl, I just need the foam to go between them.

I don't have the original foams to be able to replicate them and I don't remember ever having seen them so if anybody can provide pictures then that would be a big help too. Picture of the metal carriers below.

Also any information on the fixing hardware would be a big help too, including the chrome beading clip(s).

You just need some high density foam. Glue to your metal frame cut to near shape with an electric carving knife and then carefully shape with an angle grinder with a well worn flap disc - take your time with that.

Thanks Barrie

Its more the profile and how it varies that I'm not sure about. I could make it up as I go but it would be better to have a guide profile. I was hoping someone would have something I could use.

Hi, I have saved mine.

I am not willing to apart with them, but I can help - how do you want me to share the profile with you?
Photo, or some cutout?

Width is 0.95"
Height is 0.52"

So, it's kind of half a pipe that's about 1" in diameter.

Hi Stuart.....if you google e type cant rail you will find lots of images that will help you with the profile with the added benefit of Tadeks info above.....as far as im aware no one sells the shaped foam.....could be worth your while getting a trimmer to do them........Steve

Hi Stuart

If you look at my last restoration update thread (888330 FHC) there are a number of pictures for the cant rails

The foam shape is a D profile, set flush with the inner metal return lip on the rail, and finishes 4-5mm short of the opposite leading edge of the metal rail

Hi

I've just realised that I left this thread dangling.

For the record, what was used for the crash padding was D section rubber - IRS1703EPJ. Jaguar part number BD3631. Available from the supplier of your choice.

Belated thanks for all the advice offered.

Thanks for the post Stu.

So often we don't get a definitive answer after a post.

This is very helpful.

That's interesting.

I have a lot of time for BAS, I got my trim kit from them and their service is first class. However, when I asked them, they couldn't tell me what to use. I acknowledge that they were exceptionally busy at the time but they could have saved me a deal of time if they'd been able to tell me.

Oh well, it got sorted in the end.

You can get sponge strip in from Woolies, it is self adhesive and you buy it buy the meter.

It sticks around curves beautifully.

https://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/c-132-sa-sponge-strip

The last pair of cant rails I did, I used thick square profile black strip. You stick it on, then you sand it with a body file or 60 grit on a block to get the correct profile. Is sands down very quickly and it then ready for gluing the material on.

I even used their self adhesive chrome effect beaded strip for the chrome edging, I just pushed on the edge of the cant rail. Bends easily.

https://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/p-1919-s ... rome-strip

I think I might have even used the wider chrome self adhesive edge strip on the sills to finish the sill covers where the doors shut.

They also have extruded an aluminium length that cuts down to make luggage rails and they also sell the rubber insert by the meter as well.

https://www.woolies-trim.co.uk/p-1688-r ... oard-tread

I use the D profile extrusion on XK crash roll pads around the cockpit. That is a tricky job to get right.
