Good Evening, I’m new on here and have a question for you clever people , I currently have the engine and gearbox out of my 3.8 F.H.C my question is when I removed the steel gearbox cover from the gearbox tunnel there was a rubber seal which was in really poor condition i need to replace this but am struggling to find one , does anyone on here know a supplier ??
Thanks in advance

Hi Bruce,
The 3.8 parts manual doesn’t specify a seal between the cover and the floor, just the fasteners. SNG doesn’t list one either. One mine, there was evidence of some sort of sealant - could it be that?

I think you're right, Richard.

I used something like Sealastic or Tiger Seal on mine, which is a plastic cover. I wish I'd managed to get a metal one (I thought they were aluminium).

Good luck with the re-assembly, Bruce.

Regards

There should also be some foam in there as well Part number BD27833:

It is just 2" upholstery foam (about £5 from an upholstery shop) which you can carve to shape with a bread/carving knife and goes into place after the gearbox has been fitted and before the top cover. You need to keep heat out of the cabin and also fumes/dust so try and get as good a seal as possible.

Under the tunnel, DEI reflective aluminium or similar is perfect:

My 64 3.8 fhc definitely has a rubber seal around the metal gearbox cover. Had the car 50 years and assume it to be original fitment but who knows?

MY 62 car which had never been apart when I restored it, had a green fibreglass cover bedded on Dum Dum . The DD was used by most manufacturers to fill gaps and stop water ingress . There are other similar products available and I bought some strips of similar stuff from Frost Automotive. MY trimmer then covered the whole lot in sound deadening foil.

This is the stuff I bought to use instead of Dum Dum as its not available any more.

My 61 3.8 dhc has a fiberglass tunnel cover. I modified it with an all synchro gearbox. I believe the original part was a metal tunnel cover. Anyone know if it would fit over the all synchro gears or just the Moss box?

On my 64 3.8 with the steel cover I used generic self adhesive door seal stuck around the edge of the tunnel opening, works well.
