Hello forum - I am restoring a 1966 2+2 and want to retain my original growler horn push but the chrome retaining ring was in a bad way so I lifted the tabs to remove it and you know it - the tabs broke off!

The part is apparently 54300576 (originally made by Lucas - see below) but I can't find anywhere to buy a replacement ring. Reproduction horn push complete units are available of course but I just need the ring so it seems bonkers to buy a whole unit just to harvest the ring.... and then there is every chance it might break again while doing the swap.

Does anyone know how I can source this ring or have any ideas how I might repair the tabs?

Many Thanks

I butchered a repro horn push to get the chrome ring for mine. It fits perfectly.

Many Thanks - I fear this might end up being the only option but had hoped I might be able to track down the repo maker and buy the ring. It is so frustrating when Google doesn't have the answer because everything I have ever needed to buy or research has been at my fingertips so far...thank goodness.

The car isn't ready for the road just yet so will keep looking for a while longer

Cheers

Cant remember the details of the assembly.....cant you epoxy the ring in place.....or epoxy on a couple of small tabs?.....Steve

hi Steve

I was looking at that today.... I don't think gluing the tabs back will work because I could only do it on the very thin edge of the metal so once they were bent I am certain they wouldn't hold. I can't glue them on the inside of the ring where there is more surface area because this would fail the growler push (needs to move up and down of course) unless I take a file to my original badge. I can't glue them on the outer edge because there is no space to take even a 1mm tab really without forcing it a bit and risking it then fouling the push.

Gluing the ring in place might be the only option to avoid buying a new repo horn push just to use the chrome ring. That said another £100 is a drop in the ocean just don't tell my wife that!

I might try a very strong steri-strip or 3.... doesn't feel right when I have tried to meticulously put this car back together properly. If this doesn't work, I will epoxy it in the surround as you suggested.... Many Thanks

How about not just a tab but a tee shape tab (larger bar at top) or......Braze/solder new tabs.....if it discolores the chrome re chrome it...or try chrome spray ...iv used it on small items and had gread results........or diy nickle plate and polish it.....Steve

I will try the braze/solder approach… there is only a very small edge that shows so doubt a bit of discolouration will be a problem. Fingers crossed. Cheers
