Brake fluid warning light wiring
#1 Brake fluid warning light wiring
Hi Guys, I'm a newbie to this excellent forum.
Hope somebody can help?
The dash warning light for the brake fluid reservoirs and handbrake has suddenly stopped working.
Its not the light - the bulb is ok and there is live feed (white wire) to it and when the red/green 'out' wire is earthed it lights up.
As all three components are affected, I reckon it is the multipoint connector that is at fault and the feed into it make have come disconnected, somehow.
I've searched high and low under the dash and can't find the connector.
Can anyone point me in the direction as to where it might be located, so that I can rectify this or eliminate it as the source of my problem.
As in my sig. it's a 1965 rhd dhc.
Many thanks in advance as this is niggling me that I can't fix it!!!
Cheers,
Richard

#2 Re: Brake fluid warning light wiring
Eureka!!!
I found the connector and loose wire - by chance!!
After many, many hours of trying to locate it, with all the under dash trim removed on both the passenger and driver's side, I finally gave up trying to locate it and decided to route new wires in.
When I attached a new wire to the existing one on the brake fluid reservoir on the bulkhead on the driver's side, and started to pull it through under the dash, it snagged on something and when I pulled harder, it brought the 'offending' connector and loose wire with it through the aperture in the second bulkhead. It was obviously located, hidden, in the space between the two bulkheads where there was no chance that I could find/see it!
Not sure why the 'feed' wire to the connector had become detached.
Have reconnected it and all works well
Now have to put all the trim back!!
I'll try and post a picture of its location should anyone else have a similar problem in the future!
Cheers, Richard

Richard it’s always good when you discover something and sort out your problem. Yes, post a photo for others to benefit from your frustration.

#4 Re: Brake fluid warning light wiring
Morning Geoff,
I've just had another stroke of luck!!
When I pulled the connector through the double bulkhead to take a photo -- the offending wire had already come out of the connector!!
On closer inspection of the multiple (Ripault) connector, I found that the inner metal had fractured and wouldn't hold the bullet connector in place.
Replaced with a new one and and connected all 4 wires and all is ok.
But, I don't seem to be able to post the picture?
Anyway, will try again later (my challenge for today)
Regards,
Richard

Try Imgur to store your photos. Then click on the photo and you’ll see the option to select for forums. Select that then it’ll give you the code to paste into your reply. Good luck. If you’re having trouble search on here for posts by Heuer including the word Imgur and you’ll see a clearer explanation.

Evening Geoff,
I've tried several times to sign up for IMGUR but each time it says "this service is not available in your region"!!
Looks like I am as successful at this as I was searching for the 'hidden' multi-connector .
Will try another route.
Regards,
Richard

Richard, I should move from Bucks! Here in nearby Hampshire I tried creating a new account directly with Imgur (not via Facebook, twitter etc.) and it worked fine
Ah well

Hope this has worked!! Having a great problem posting an image.
This should be a photo of the wiring for the brake fluid warning light (from the handbrake and the 2 brake fluid reservoirs) hiding under the right hand dash above and to the right of the steering column.
You should be able to see the 'offending' wire that has somehow become detached from the 4-wire ripault connector.
Cheers,
Richard

Hi Richard
I know it's an older thread but I hope you or another may remember if this connector had 4 wires to it. ie: warning light RG, handbrake, and both RG from each brake fluid bottle. My older photos show 3 but there are 4 wires ending here from above components on the new harness'. All wiring diagrams I have seen do not have a connector shown joining both fluid reservoirs. Hope you can help
regards Peter

Hi Peter,
Although I can’t remember, I’m sure there would have been 4 connectors, one is the ‘feed’ and the other three are one for the handbrake and 2 for the individual brake fluid reservoirs.
Hope that helps.
Regards,
Richard

Interesting pic, did you remove your flasher unit for the picture or don't you have one?

Hi Randall,
Yes I did take the flasher unit out for the picture and to make sure I didn’t damage it when working on the wiring close by.
Obviously put it back afterwards!!
Cheers,
Richard

Hi Richard
Thanks so much for the response. I intend to connect the four in both ends of a double connector as your image. Your photo has been a great help though I notice that the connections are at the top of the bulkhead near the large grommet. Mine were just accessible below the facia and probably will end up lost in the bulkhead as your original post. Thanks again.
Kind regards
Peter

Hi Peter,
Glad to be of help.
It was a devil of a job trying to find the connector and gave up several times but a good friend said it’s not like me to give up so on the umpteenth search, I found it - it was (and is now) tucked in the inner bullhead just through where you see the rubber grommet lined aperture.
Regards,
Richard

And there on the photo is the Lucas cable label :-)
I think there should be one for every section of wiring.
