Numbers of the rev counter

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some clarification on the numbers of the rev counter, especially on the 61 models.

This excellent forum specifies the number rv7403/02, then rv7413/03. The change is being made for the OTS LHD models at number 876117, and 850289,860029, 885206 for the other models.

My car (875987 built in November 1961) should therefore be equipped with rv7403/02. It currently has a 7413/03.

So I have two main questions:

-Do owners of a nearby model confirm this on their car?

-On which model was mounted the number RV 74 03/00, type of meter, very easy to find. Was he mounted on e-type?

And finally, question that kills, who would have a 7403/02 for sale?

Good evening everyone
I'm coming back to you regarding this question of the rev counter for the 1961s Jaguar E-type OTS LHD n° 875987.
My problem comes from the tachometer whose number is RV7413/03. It does not seem to correspond with the literature which indicates for this date an RV7403/02. Unfortunately, the only references found for sale and on your site are RV7403/00. So there is a discrepancy that I cannot explain. Can you enlighten me on this.
Did the RV7403/02 model really exist? If so, why can't it be found on the market?
Do you know if the transition between the 7403 and 7413 models was brutal or if it is possible that my car was originally equipped with this 7413 model?
I would like to know the opinion of the owners of the numbers approaching 875987.

Why do you have so many 7403/00 for sale on ebay and no 7403/02. On which cars were the 7403/00 mounted?

According to the list, many other Jaguar models may have had them fitted besides E Type.

Firstly all the E-Type tachometers we make or fully electronic as none of the equipment to make the originals exists, Even the XKSS, C, D & E types models built Jaguar themselves have to use them.

The RV7403-02 did exist but the only difference over the 00 was different length clamps as the dashboard thickness was different

The difference between the 7403 & 7413 range was apparently the 7413 had a MK II movement.

There is nobody in the company who worked on or knows anything about the original tachos, we are only a small company of 60 employees.

We do not have lists of what gauges were fitted to specific models by the manufacturers

The first cars, up to ~January 1962, were fitted with the 7402/02 tachometer which was an assembly including the clock. The 7402/03 tachometer was a service replacement and supplied without the clock. These were the Smiths codes used for ordering parts. Many tachometers were replaced in service after complaints of waggling fingers hence the number in circulation. Both should be marked 'Made in England'. So:

RV.7403/02 - rev counter and clock assembly (clock either CE.1111/00 or blank)
RV.7403/03 - rev counter only
CE.1111/00 - clock only

Subsequently all cars were fitted with the Smiths RV.7413/04 rev counter with a modified movement and same CE.1111/00 clock. The rev counter was marked 'Made in UK', 'RV.7413/04' and the clock marked 'CE.1111/00'.

So the tachometer (Jaguar always referred to it as a rev counter) fitted to the OP's car is period correct but not as fitted at the Factory. It is a service replacement.

I read this thread because I was interested not because I thought I had a problem but ….. reading the factory info I was waiting to find my tach but never did so it looks like I’ve discovered a problem I didn’t know I had. See the pic below I have 7414/06. The car is 876784, Feb 62 LHD Roadster

Sadly, you have a Rev Counter from a different vehicle (possibly a 4.2). For a '62 3.8, it should look like this:



The redline area for a 3.8 is at higher revs than a 4.2. Your clock also says negative earth on it which it should not
