I am curious as to what sort of material was originally in the gap where the parking brake is located on a September 1965 build date coupe. Mine is gone but I seem to remember that it was a white plastic stiff hair like material. When I look at the various e-type books on my shelves, it looks to be a solid black rubber strip on each side of the brake handle (to close up the gap and help prevent loose coins falling into the ratchet mechanism).

When I had my centre console re trimmed I asked for the rubber handbrake slot cover to be replaced with leather to match the rest of the trim. Mine was beige . I think it looks better although not original
