#1 FACTORY FIT - Series 1 3.8

Post by 1954Etype » Thu Dec 30, 2010 10:37 pm

The above was part of the press pack handed out by Jaguar in March 1961.

One of the problems we have when restoring our cars (or replacing a component) is understanding exactly how the factory fitted them. We are adding 'stickies' for each model Series which will contain detailed photographs from the area of a car that the photographer believes to be untouched from when it was originally built. Over time, we hope to build a comprehensive resource for restorers to reference. If you have a photograph you would like to add, please send them via PM to any of the moderators (this will allow us to avoid any duplicates etc). Below is the link to the JCNA judging guides (these can be printed off and are a useful reference when trying to work out what colour to paint a component for example).

Component paint colours: http://www.jag-lovers.org/e-type/paint.html
Jaguar Nuts, Bolts and Fasteners specs: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vbkgbwl4b3tyc ... s.pdf?dl=1
Please help support this new initiative.

Angus.

These pictures were taken by the owner of this newly delivered car on his driveway, Illinois 1961. They are particularly fascinating because of their high quality which captures the quality of the paint, fit and panels - something which modern pictures and restored cars can never replicate. You will also note the studs for a tonneau cover, presumably dealer fitted?
Image
Image
Image

According to the owners son "I recalled that Dad and I were at John Wienberger?s Continental Imports shop in La Grange one day with the 4.2 and found the remains of our old red OTS ignominiously stuffed in a corner of the lot. John explained it had blown a bald tire at speed on the Dan Ryan Expressway."

Car 881640

Many thanks to Bob Stevenson for the following. Chassis No 881640 1964 OTS:

"it's a fairly late 3.8. One interesting thing is the spark plug caps, which are the second style, that I have been unable to date when the changes from 1st to 2nd to 3rd styles took place. I've tried to contact Champion to see if they have an archives with no luck to this point in time. The only thing ever replaced on this car was one radiator hose, the header tank mount( he still had the old one which I should have taken a picture of but didn't) and the resonators, which to add insult to injury are for a 4.2 car."

Angus Comment: Fantastic car Bob. Has the data plate been replaced as it looks as though it is held on with a self tapper and not the usual pop rivet.

This is a totally original and un-restored 1963 OTS #879032 having covered 29k miles and had one owner until 2005 who fastidiously maintained it. One interesting thing is the red pipping on the hood cover which also had the body number chalked on the inside.

This is an outside bonnet lock OTS and the upper wishbone top cover is stamped 'A&A' - Alford and Alder, Hemel Hempstead who specialised in front axles and steering components.

Dip Switch Escutcheon
Up until late 1962 the Dip switch escutcheon font was as shown on the left. Later cars, right through S2 production, had the escutcheon on the right:
Image

Forum member Series1 Stu adds:
"My car, which rolled off the production line on 28th December 1962, has the HEADLAMP escutcheon so David's note that it changed in late 1962 is correct - they were still rolling out with the originals between Christmas and New Year! Probably a bit of mix and match going on.

PS - I haven't been able to find any pictures of this detail in the originality and restoration books by Klausager, Porter or Barzilay. The photographs always seem to have it cropped out."

Bonnet loom retention clip - invariably missing and difficult to replace:
Image

Speedometer cable clips:
Ever wondered about those two holes in the stabiliser A bracket on the bulkhead ? This is what they should hold:
Image

The clip supports the speedometer cable. The brackets are different for LHD and RHD; part #C17410 for RHD and C18128 for LHD and available from Richard Smith or SNGB.
Image

This is the fitting on a RHD car (#850034):
Image
This is the fitting on a LHD car:
Image

The very early LHD cars had the clip on the A bracket, later cars had it on the clutch housing:
Image

All LHD cars also had a clip on the pedal housing:
Image

The battery tie down spring washers part # FG204/X (1/4") which go under the two wing nuts, the clutch operating arm pivot and the accelerator linkage fulcrum lever (5/8" but not available from the usuals - try Googling 'Thackary Washer':

Original paint runs and painters stamp in the number plate recess on this early FHC. Each painter had a stamp as they were working on piece rate and could prove what work they had done. Incidentally the paint runs are upside down in the centre console area because of the way the cars were painted (on a rotisserie). Many thanks to Paul Brown Classic Jaguar for pointing these out:

#7 Support Strap for Adjusting Levers

Post by Heuer » Fri Sep 06, 2013 11:06 am

Ever wondered what those four holes in the front seat squab metal were for? (if there is a hole in the E-Type, Jaguar meant for something to go there!).
Image

It was the Support Strap for Adjusting Levers #BD19378 on p245 of parts catalogue.
Image

They seem to be missing from almost every car I have seen presumably because they must be used in conjunction with the correct seat spacers (four #BD17648 packers between slides and floor, two #C18698 spacers at front fixings between slides and seats) which invariably got lost when a mechanic removed the seats. The same small spacers can be used between the radiator and the tie bars.
Image

Far easier to remove the support strap than find the spacers! They also had to be removed each time the seat was taken out. Jaguar even ensured the front fixings were longer than the rear to accommodate the spacers.
Image

The spacers are there to make sure the adjusting levers do not foul and damage the seat upholstery; the support straps are there to make sure someone does not strain and bend the adjusting levers during operation.

They are held in place by countersunk bolts so as not to foul the seat base. Many thanks to Paul Brown Classic Jaguar for these pictures of an original support strap:

Often overlooked or lost this distance piece C11583 was fitted to the long stud between the dip stick holder and the manifold:

I am surprised how many cars have this part missing (usually after fitting stainless steel exhaust systems I might add). On the left is #C19018 'Hooked Safety Bracket' which works with the tie plate between the resonators. Without it, when the Metalastic rubber mount fails (and it will!), those expensive resonators will be dragging their back sides along the road. This catches them!
Image

My theory about some of these missing parts is they are not illustrated in the Spares Catalogue and people think they do not exist because they don't read the descriptions pages. i.e.

Bonnet cable clip
Seat packing pieces
Speedometer cable support clip
Battery tie down spring washers

Hi David

Having seen this post I delved in the loft and unearthed my seats...one strap missing...one remaining  ....FWIW...mine is a March 63 car and the bracket is painted

Regards
Jonathan

Edit: Ahem.... My apologies, I clearly need to look harder next time, it's Cadmium plated, dulled somewhat so it looked grey/painted... Let me take some pictures in the daylight and post them ...i have the later graphics on the end of the seat slider that you mentioned...will post them too.

Three more parts which are not illustrated in the Parts Catalogue, are usually missing and replaced with standard bullet connectors:

These fit to the bonnet bulkhead inside the front wings (on all S1 and S2 cars). They are:
10 way termination block #C2532
5 way termination block #C2796
Bracket for 5 way termination block #3570

This is the hatch door latch from an early car as it has only two attachment holes (top in picture) whereas later versions have three.

Has been unavailable but Richard Smith is going to have some made (he wanted pictures of mine to validate against his original).

These double spring washers, or 'Thackery' washers, are used under the battery tie down wing nuts (1/4"), on the clutch pivot pin adjuster (5/16") and accelerator linkage fulcrum lever (RHD cars only). They are used to allow some controlled play:
Image

Used on all S1's and S2's.

Sometimes missing or not used this clip secures the SU overflow pipes to the oil filter assembly:

Difficult to get a picture on the car but this is how it fits on the oil filter housing. The three copper SU overflow pipes are gathered together in a line of three and supported by the bracket:
Image

The Service Manual shows the routing:
Image

Incidentally the four bolts holding the filter assembly each have a copper washer under the steel washer to prevent oil leaks

True to his word, Richard has produced the 3.8 seat adjuster arm support straps in 10 days as promised! Also sent me a NOS bonnet harness clip as mine is missing on the OTS. £5 for each of these three items.
Image

Hencefoth every 3.8 I sit in I am going to press down on the seat adjuster and if it moves there is going to be lots of head shaking and sharp intakes of breath  Having installed these I can understand why they are missing off so many cars! It would be quicker to set up the front suspension  There is little adjustment so you have to gently bend the arm to get the seat adjustment working. A fraction of an inch out and the seat won't move :x

Cheney Clips

Jaguar used Cheney clips on the coolant hoses, the steering rack bellows and the petrol filler hose.

C. W. Cheney & Son Ltd
Manufacturer of locks, latches, clips, buttons and hinges. Factory Road, Hockley, Birmingham
1920 Established by Charles William Cheney
1944 Patented the Cheney clip
1994 Company bought by Frantzen (Germany)
2000 Acquired by Cumberland Leasing Corporation
2001 Acquired by F.H.Tomkins Buckle Company Ltd. of Brockhurst Crescent, Walsall

Image

They are distinguished from other clips (note not 'clamps') by having a round slotted screw head and screw perforations that do not go completely through the mild steel bands so as to protect the hose from damage. They were bright cadmium plated which mellows to grey with age. Markings should include the company name (one of two styles as below), the size, 'England', 'Double Grip' and AGS or BS number. The differences between AGS and BS are:

1. BS3628 "Specification for hose clips (worm drive type) for general purpose use" was issued on 31 March 1963. So Cheney clips marked BS3628 would be later than that date, how long after would depend on when Cheney signed up to the BSI spec (it was not compulsory), how long it took to re-tool and how long it took the BS marked clips to enter the supply line. The BS3628 specification has been withdrawn and no longer valid

2. AGS605 is an aeronautical standard for clips which was managed by Society of British Aircraft Constructors founded in 1916, known as SBAC, the UK's national trade association representing companies supplying civil air transport, aerospace defence, homeland security and space. It is now managed by ASD Standards Organisation. Specification AGS-605-012 "Clip, Hose (Type J) Assembly" is sill in valid, in its twelfth edition.

3. So BS3628 clips could only be on cars produced after March 1963 at the earliest, AGS.605 clips can be on any car as they were made and supplied to the aero industry (or car manufacturers depending on what Cheney had in stock) until production stopped in 1994. They could therefore appear on any age car.

Cadmium plated reproductions are available from XK's Unlmited (USA) and Bresco (UK) amongst others but they are not particularly strong, especially the smaller sizes:
Image
Image
Image
Image
Jubilee clips use the same size reference as Cheney:
Image
Image

For the 3.8 coolant hoses you require:
C2905/1 = Cheney 00 (4 off)
C2905/2 = Cheney 0 (4 off)
C2905/4 = Cheney 2A (6 off)
C2905/5 = Cheney 3A (2 off)
C2905/12 = Cheney 1X (2 off)

For the steering rack:
C2905/4 = Cheney 2A (1 off)
C2905/2 = Cheney 0 (2 off)

For the fuel tank:
C2905/1 = Cheney 00 (2 off)
C2905/7 = Cheney 5A (2 off)

For the oil filter return pipe:
C2905/2 = Cheney 0 (2 off)

Note 1: The vacuum hose clips C15886/5 (4 off) are not the Cheney screw type

Note 2: They are not a very good design as the mild steel stretches and the simple slotted screw makes tightening up difficult. Suggest you only put them were they can be seen or where you can easily get at them; for everywhere else use s/s Jubilee clips, especially the fuel tank unless you like the smell of petrol! If you are more interested in driving the car rather than showing it use s/s Jubilee clips everywhere for leak free motoring. Now you know why Jaguar added two bottles of Bar Leaks to every car's cooling system on the production line!

Note 3: Jaguar also used 'Regent' clips at various times but never 'Jubilee' clips as far as we know

Note 4: Cheney also made clips in metric sizes which were supplied to Ferrari and Maserati amongst others. These have different markings stamped on them.

Note 4: More info here: http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?t=4913
