This is a 1964 one owner car with 26,000 miles on the clock and then for 40 years. Lots of interesting original detail and the only disappointment is the missing toolkit:

Some points worth noting:

Screws holding headlamp surrounds and side lights are slotted
Five way terminal for wiper motor is held in place with strapping - the 3.8 had a metal bracket
Early style heater box grill retainer
Position of latches with bonnet closed and locked

Seen on the above car is this cloth label on the battery terminal lead.

We have seen it before on the underside of the Hardura of Steve's car:

Nice pics.
But I really find it hard to believe this car covered only the stated low mileage, given various details.
Is it the car of the Beverly Hillibillies?

Tool Kit

All S1 4.2's left the Factory with a full tool kit which was wrapped in a clear plastic bag (see post #24). If a tool kit was subsequently ordered from the Spares Department it had the part number 11610 and was shipped in a brown bag. The Girling bleeder tin suggests this kit dates from late 1967:

Spark Plugs

The 4.2 cars were fitted with Champion N-5 sparking plugs by the Factory. These were changed from engine 7E10447 to N-11Y plugs due to complaints of plug fouling at low speed. The same problem occured with the 3.8 engines and the plugs were changed from N-5 to N-12Y in December 1962. Odd the Factory persevered with the N-5 -plugs on the 4.2's.

#48 Original gear knob on 4.2

Post by Maikel » Fri Oct 21, 2022 6:40 am

Good day everyone,

we had that before and I am still confused.
Could be that the original gear knob changed at some point.

Which of the three is the original? Or are two of them are original but at different period?
Whoever of you still has the original for 100% might please post a picture of it here.

Many thanks
Maikel

No, the gear knob changed during 4.2 production. The one on the right in your photo is Factory correct with the flat topped 3. An original shift knob measures 1.66" (42mm) in diameter, weighs 8.1 oz (230 gms) and the core is non-magnetic; most repros are magnetic and weigh about 5oz (140 gms).

Repro left has magnetic thread, original right has non-magnetic thread:

Thank you David,

that confuses me even more.

The left one is non magnet and 1,681" neqr 230 gr
The center one is non magnetic and 1.699" near 200 gr
The right one is magnetic and 1.618" near 150 gr

I can not imagine they are all repros.

Can someone who has for sure an original post some pics.
Could one of them be of a S2

All 4.2 onwards cars S1/S2/S3 had the same knob - C23007 - AFAIK. This is a photo from Clausagers Factory Original book. The rubber gaiter means it was pre October 1966 production.:

Image

It was discussed at length here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=13140&p=107339 although interestingly one of the knobs measured had the same '3' as yours:
Image

I can find no record of any change.

Incidentally this shows what is under the plastic knob:

For my four pennyworth !
I have had my 1967 4.2 FHC for over 20 years now and one thing I decided was that I would always retain the gear knob which came with the car as the thought that anyone who had driven the car would have made contact with the car through that key part appealed to me. It is one of the final 60 Series 1 FHC cars built according to the chassis number.
Although the gear knob is well used with no white paint evident and it has a crack in the black plastic, I still keep it on the car as I believed it to be the original one from 1967 and had no reason to doubt it.
Although all the parameters above are met, it is heavy at 230 grams, has a non-magnetic insert and is 1.662 inches in diameter, the number “3” is not flat topped. So effectively it is the same as Maikel’s one on the left in his post #48 above with the specifications of it in his post #50.
Photos below :-

The mystery deepens ?

Dave

It could be a change of supplier or the original mould was damaged and remade with a different font. Of course it could be the rounded 3 is the original and the flat 3 is the repro.

Keep the data coming to see if we can pin it down to a year.

Aha .....

thank you 44DHR,

Very intetesting. So yours also has the round 3 but also the lining of the gear pattern is on the outer edge of the R and 3 and 4. ( not pointing to the middle of R, 3 and 4)

Image

So, we do have 4 different knobs already.
Some more out there with an original gear knob?

Jaguar used a font with a flat topped 3 on the 3.8 gear knob which it would seem logical they would continue using:
Image

The 4.2 style knob was fitted to production cars for nine years so perhaps not surprising there are variations. From what I can find I believe the knobs were made by Streetly Manufacturing Co of Streetly, Sutton Coldfield, near Birmingham. They manufactured Plastic Mouldings for the trade in Beetle Urea and Melamine, Phenolic and Thermo-Plastic materials and were part of British Industrial Plastics who produced resins and moulding powders.

I would love to contribute as mine is 25 Apr, chassis no 1E21509, and retains its unquestionably original knob; but 103,000 miles (also unquestionable) of caressing have taken their toll, and the extremities of the numerals have long since faded into the mists of history...

Jeremy, my car was manufactured on the 3rd May 1967 and therefore very close to your April 1967 FHC.
I have never questioned that my gear knob was not the original factory supplied item and despite you not being able to read the complete numbers clearly, perhaps the interesting thing is that your gear knob also has the “gate” markings offset outside the centre lines of the “R” and the “3” and 4”, as mine has.
Perhaps this “gate” marking is a key delineator ?

Dave

The Clausager photo is of an April 1965 car so the knob design changed sometime after that. This is car 1E20139 late Dec 1964:
