Looking into my old 3.8 series one FHC I now believe that it was registered in March 1964, however it had the alloy console. Can anyone tell me when they changed to the fabric covered centre panel? Either my car was just built before this changeover or was re registered on a 64 plate and was an earlier car?

About September 1963 according to Haddock. The centre console was leather faced whilst the centre dash was vacuum formed thermoplastic like the side dash.

See if you can find a number crayoned on it underneath. If is the same body number as the car, it should be the original one. Like David (and HAddock) I think by 64 they were trimmed in fabric.

Oh sorry I did not make myself clear. I dont have the car any more and am trying to see whether it still exists. I recall the registration was PEY which was issued in March 64 and had no suffix letter. I am really trying to find out whether it could have been registered PEY... from new and with an alloy dash or not, otherwise it may have been a re register onto a March 64 plate and not being able to remember the chassis number I guess its gine from my life for good! Which may not be a bad thing, but I would love to get it back really

My OTS was built on March 22nd, 1964 and has a red interior of the early, alu dash and centre console. Exported new to the US.
All expertise points to the car leaving the factory with the black instrument board and leather console with storage box/armrest.
Either Jaguar found a pile of these and decided to use them or it has been changed later. By the looks of things, I would say it?s original or was installed a long, long time ago.

Interesting , thank you for that. Its fairly tricky working all that has gone on so long after the event, and as you say, the dash could have been changed by a subsequent owner anyway.
thanks for the reposnse
