#1 Assembling Britax Roof / broken edges

Post by Durango2k » Mon Apr 01, 2024 4:30 pm

Morning,

I started assembly of my Britax roof, and now it seems I finally need a solution. The roof features 4 round alloy (Mazac? Monkey metal ?) edges. On two of them the tabs are broken.

There‘s almost certainly no source for these I guess anymore.

So, what would you say- I thought I should maybe try to have someone carve these for me from a solid block ?

Or, try to digitize them and print them from plastic ?

Or take what I have, remove as much metal from the remaining tabs and glue- in alloy tabs which are made to fit ? That seems to be the easiest way ?

Or forget about the tabs, and glue the edges on the roof using MS Polymer glue like Dekasil MS5 ? They will never come of and MS5 is elastic enough and UV stable afaik.

Kind regards,

Carsten, on the home straight this time.

Hi Steve,

Okay thanks for the input - I wrote them- maybe they have some remains.

I found an MGB roof on facebook, 150 pounds looking similar, but of course can‘t confirm. And wrecking another complete item makes no real sense.

Current plan is to use a Dremel tool, and make room for a new tab. This will be wider at the rear end, and be embedded in the main part. Will glue in using JB Weld. Later on the roof this side will be pressed against the car roof anyway, so it can go nowhere plus the glue. I think this will work.

I‘ll document the process here / must see local Home Despot tomorrow to buy a set of dremel milling tools.

Hi Carsten, good to see you back with us.

This would be what I'd do.

All of the other options offer a lot of work and a moderate chance of failure.
