#1 Fitting MK 2 engine into an 4.2 S1 e-type?

Post by ysmalkie » Mon Aug 12, 2024 7:24 pm

I saw a S1 4.2 in a friendly workshop the other day with what appears to be a Mk 2 engine - the sump front and rear are wider.

Does the engine fit right through or does it require modifications? It definitely has a non standard exhaust arrangement...

I'm pretty sure you'd need an e Type sump without modification to the engine frames and reaction plate.

Aren’t the carbs different for a Mark 2 than an E Type? Unless correct manifold and carbs have been fitted I believe they would hit the bonnet.

What aspect made you think it was a MK2 engine?

When you say mk2 engine what are you actually refering to..the complete unit with all ancillary or just the block.
Plenty of E types with 3.8 and 4.2 blocks from other models fitted..... sumps. heads carbs and manifolds need some thinking about....Steve

Also, Mk2's only came with 2.4, 3.4 & 3.8 litre engines so, if it was a 4.2, it was from a different model.

I am so sorry - this is what happens when you go on vacation without a laptop...

Anyway, the sump is a mk2 sump (I beleive) it's wider in the front and back.
What's curious is that the exhaust system is made to fit around the sump. On top, it really nicely bent and routed around.

If the car is still there, I will try to take some photos.

If you have a sump with wide "wings", the wings can be cut off pretty easily and re-welded on, to make the sump flat like an E type one.

The last time I did one was about 5 years ago, I cut an alloy XJ6 sump, and made the patches out of the left over bits.

A local engineering shop charged me £25 to tig weld the patches back on, to make it more E type style.

Saved me buying a new sump. It didn't look too bad at all.

I think I had to change the oil pick up pipes however.
