876230 (Nov 1961 LHD DHC) is coming along well but I've painted myself into a corner. Engine and IRS look great in place but now I discover that I have to remove one to install the prop shaft. Has anyone cut the top off the inside tunnel for this purpose? It could be neatly replaced with plates and screws and, when covered with carpet, could not be detected. It would also be easier for the next owner to accomplish this task. Would this be a sacrilege or is it a common practice?

IMO it would be sacrilege, but apart from that it contributes to the structural rigidity of the monocoque.

The IRS is probably the easiest to remove
Do you not have any of the restoration books shown in the knowledge section? There are several that will help you not paint yourself into a corner again. Also the restoration threads are well worth reviewing.
