#1 Dash top vents 3.8 vs 4.2

Post by Gfhug » Tue Sep 17, 2024 2:21 pm

Are the dash top air vents/nozzles (not the bezels) held in place differently 3.8 (or even early 3.8) vs 4.2?
I have an S1 metal dash top with metal tags welded on at the vent holes so that the triangular air vent is held in place by them. But I’ve also seen these vents being held on by screws on a 4.2 S1 (metal tags missing) as on the S2.
Yes, the bezels are screwed down and it looks like those screws were used on later cars to attach the vent too.

Thanks for any comments.

Good question Geoff...

On a slight tangent, with appropriate material choice, the funnels/plenums beneath the dash top could be 3d printed to suit either variant. I have one of my design fitted in my S2 at the moment - the tricky part on the S2 and others, is that the flange has to flex enough to pass through the slot in the dash top. Most printer materials are somewhat inflexible, but some careful re-shaping of the funnel flange helps a lot with fitting.

The S1, in this respect looks easier, as it would be retained by the welded tags, and should presumably slide into place from one side or the other. It would be very helpful if anyone has any images of the original centre funnel - the shaping to avoid the screen tensioning rod is unclear to me, and a picture of an original part would help a lot. It looks like a re-manufactured centre funnel would be helpful on the S1.

I drew up and printed bezels for my early 62 after finding the thin dash under a bad covering

Thanks for that link, Airborne. By the looks of it the very early cars had the vents/nozzles held on by those metal tags but after a while that was changed to just using the bezel screws to hold them in place.
So it looks like I own an early dash top, all I need is the rest of the car to claim an OBL flat floor 61 OTS
