Series 1 propshaft

Just servicing my propshaft for my 66, series 1. The rubber boot/gaiter has split right at the point it exits the main prop. It's not the standard gaitor but the one that looks like a bit of bicycle inner tube

I need to clear the odd bit that's left inside the socket but it's stuck inside the tube. Does anyone know how they were originally attached to the inside of the propshaft socket - glued or spring clip.

Also, has anyone found a source for this part other than resorting to the bike inner tube
