Hi
I have the close ratio EJ gearbox coupled with a 3.31 diff, as I am always searching for 5th gear I am considering swapping my diff ratio to 3.07, has anyone got this combo and what do they think, I am just a bit worried that gears 1 to 3 might be a bit tall. I have the 4 2 so hopefully it should be ok, but I am keen to hear from someone who actually drives with this setup. Thanks
Ian

Thanks

As far as im aware all gearboxes are 1:1 ratio in 4th gear....so with the 3.07 you will be doing less revs than with a 3:31.....compared to modern cars yes it still seems that you want a 5th gear....but just drive it as its ment to be...Steve..ps I don't know how 1-3 compare

#4 Re: Close ratio gearbox
I’ve a 3.07 diff with an EJ box (early 67). The 4.2 is torquey enough to manage any combination of ratios. I can (I have needed to when the gear lever bush moved up the gear lever) pull away in top gear. The engine is happy at 1000 rpm, not juddery at all and will pull cleanly right up to peak power.
My 2+2 is heavier than either the FHC or OTS - more metal and larger windscreen, yet you wouldn’t notice under normal daily driving.
Top gear cruising - 2000 rpm is 50 ish mph. 3000 rpm is a sniff over 75 although the speedo suggests it’s nearer 80. (Tyres are full profile but not as tall as the Dunlops or crossplies fitted OE.)

#6 Re: Close ratio gearbox
I swopped my 3.33 for 3.07, then went for a 2.88!!
Also have a 5 speed (T5) box fitted.
The cylinder head was ‘breathed’ on by Peter Lander some years ago which made the car even more tractable.
It has no problem in pulling from 1000rpm in 5th gear (but don’t do this regularly though!!).
Lovely for touring
