#1 Series 1 Starter Circuit - I don't understand

Ok - trying to rebuild a rusted series (64) FHC
a lot of missing parts and body - especially around the battery box
The circuit diagram shows the battery positive terminal connecting to the jump post (which is also missing) and also connecting to the starter cable on the jump post
Wouldn't doing this completely miss starter relay - and connect the battery directly to the starter and would therefore be continually on?
What am I missing??

The starter motor is actually 2 parts...the motor/pinion and the solonoid.....the battery cable goes to the solonoid...when the starter relay operates it pulls in the solonoid that then connects the battery cable to the motor...Steve

Hello and welcome to the best place for all things E Type.
To help people answer your questions, please add your name and car type to your signature area by clicking on your user name top right.
That way others will know to answer appropriately. For example different responses for a 3.8 vs 4.2 car, positive and negative earth, different brakes. It all helps give you the info you want.

Thanks for your response - had a look and couldn't see how I could edit my profile to add the car details
Its a 1964 e-type FHC from North America (LHD) - 3.8 - 5 Speed car - full of rust, but (mostly) complete
Does anyone have an image of how the Battery connects to the starter relay for a 64 - all of this is disconnected and the battery area is rust away - the car doesn't appear to have a solenoid on the starter motor itself

If your car's a 1964 3.8 it doesn't have a jump post.
There is a remote starter solenoid C19468 with manual starter button mounted underneath the heater box.
The battery cable goes to one solenoid post, and then a cable goes to the starter motor. Have a look here

There's a white/red wire with a big Lucar connector that comes from the starter switch on the dash.

Hi there “learningallthetime” !!
Here’s a picture of a similar LHD rusty 3.8. The starter solenoid is circled in red. The nearmost connector is where the battery connects, and the furthest connect goes straight to the starter motor.
You can also see where the other battery connection bolts straight to the bulkhead. Remember yours will probably be +ve earth!

Turn's out I was looking at a slighter later wiring diagram and I am missing the solenoid - but at least now I'm on the right track

I'm completely missing the solenoid setup - hence the confusion

We are generally discouraged from using too many quotes as it all uses up server space. If you do need to quote edit it down to just a few relevant words, please.
Conversion to negative earth is well worth considering while you’re working on the project. There are details of how to do it in the forum. As you’ve learned there is so much on here and lots of friendly help and advice.
