Having never seen an Ace or Hills peak number plate in the flesh, is there a noticeable difference in the 3 1/8" numerical characters.

Alun, advance search for ‘number’ with Heuer as author. Then search within the results for ‘plate’. Our administrator has posted many times about number plates.
You can also search for ‘ace’ and get lots of useful results. Not sure about the Hills plates you mention.

Edited: I’ve just searched for ‘number’ then within the results for ‘hills’ and got a few useful hits.

I’m sure the above will give you a good starting point to judge by.
