fuel filter won't fit

I purchased the only fuel filter I could find that was specified for a "glass bowl", as is mine.
But I discovered that this filter, ref C28080*, does not fit in my bowl (maybe not original).



Any idea of another reference for a fuel filter that would fit in this narrow bowl?

Worth having a read here....S1 typically had the disc gauze filter......many of these aftermarket paper filters filters dont work as per the original design by Jaguar....sediment collects inside the filter so can't be seen in the glass bowl.....what filter unit do you have is it E type?.....some jag models use a shorter filter....Steve viewtopic.php?t=13616

I ended up with a completely clogged paper filter (though the blockage wasn't visible), which forced me to limp home at 5 km/h at 2 a.m.! So, I used a butane torch on it to salvage the metal parts. I then fitted a section of fuel oil filter onto the metal components and bonded everything together with 24 h epoxy. It’s been in place for three months now with no signs of the bond failing; however, you do have to remove all the original molded plastic parts, as they aren't resistant to gasoline—unlike heating oil.

Steve, thank you for the links. I realize that a simple question calls for a complicated answer!
Nevertheless, I chose to try the GF124 AC Delco. It seems shorter than the SNG's, so could possibly fit into the bowl
As for the originality of my filter and bowl, I am not sure at all. And I can't remember if the (paper) filter was in the bowl when I got the car. As a matter of fact I can't find it back today. However I found a brass filter mesh in the filter head.
Pierre's DIY would be a last chance solution.

Philippe.....if you found a brass disc filter mesh in your filter head then that is the filter for the S1 cars...still available

The round disc gauze filter was used for S1 cars as far as im aware....you dont use both.....look at the Jaguar parts catalogue part numbers...part number 7299.... Steve

as a matter of fact, I bought that 7299 filter, but I was convinced I needed the paper filter too.
By pure chance, I looked at a 65 FHC, yesterday in a local show, and it had no paper filter: the glass bowl was empty, just full of fuel.
My quest was not justified, then.

Thanks for the clarification, I was also unsure whether to use both filters at the same time (thinking the gauze was for larger debris and the paper for fine ones).
Actually, in my 3.8 OTS I see the filter paper and on my 3.8 FHC the gauze one.
I will have to inspect if the OTS has both...

What they had from the factory is listed in the Jaguar parts catalogue.....obviously a the disc gauze won't filter as fine a others.....so you have choices....Steve

They’re cleanable and reusable.

My old (gauze) filter was quite dirty & a bit corroded



I can explain that by the long immobilization of the car somewhere in a californien barn.
For the price, I'll change it for a new one from SNG.

And yes I ordered paper filters from Betaset. Should receive them soon. I'll tell you how they fit.

On reception of the Betaset filters, it appears they are exactly the same as the ones of Barratt.
So they don't fit either
I came to believe that MY bowl is not standard, with its conical shape.
I'll try a DIY mod...

Epilogue (until a complete test)

I tried another filter design, the "donut shaped filter", made of a solid foam:

At first instance, I was disappointed to see that it didn't fit in the bowl either :

But its length was right. So a little of filing and it let itself in, alleluia :

As the gaskets have the right sizes:

hopefully the set up will work fine, with the fuel flow coming in by the center and going out through inner and outer faces of the foam material.

Quite a relief I must admit. And, with two filters, I have "belt and braces" as we say in french (what is the expression in English?)
