Engine Block markings

I have the letters PWU ( which of course means Power Works Unit) stamped at the front top of my block just below the cylinder head. Anyone know what it means? It was an idle thought that it may mean something significant, maybe it is a batch number or something

No you must be thinking of the 4.2 Lee! This is the superior 3.8 version.

I've seen similar markings on other block/timing cover combinations. There should be the same markings on the block adjacent to these. I was under the impression that these where applied to prevent the timing cover getting separated from the block it was machined with during assembly, much in the same way as you will see on your main bearing caps.
Could be wrong though.

When I last had a block machined it came back with JEP stamped in this place, it was my initials and put on by the Machine Shop to identify it as my block 8)

interesting idea . The owners name had initials that are not these. However, when I strip the engine we will no doubt be able to see whether it has been rebuilt or not. Thanks for the idea though.

Picked my engine up from my man today.

He confirmed that the engine had never been apart.

My engine has 3 initials on the block too, he reckons it might be the original engine builders initials. Some builders did this, others didn't bother.

He has seen heads too and in particular quite a few heads with "TOM" scribed onto them.

Well its never been done before which is cool but I need to get into the waterways to get all the sludge out........Although they boil washed the engine it didn't do the job

that should be fun. did you have to have it rebored or was it just a hone etc? cleaning water should slow you down for a while!

Hi all

Mines a March 63 FHC, chassis 888330, listed on XKE Data, full restoration required, so out of curiosity I cleaned up round this area and found the initials LFN
Anyone else out there got the same..

SOMEone must know what these digits mean. I have to say that it must be either an engine builders initials or a coding for the front cover to block? Anyway, the answer is out there somewhere!

I had a look at mine today, they are.. XQV ... so i don't think they would have been the engine builders initials.
( well not back in the 60s, but maybe today though )

Indeed, not initials! Having looked at Lee's 4.2 engine in pieces, next to each main bearing is a three letter code which corresponds to the letters on his front cover. So I think we can therefore deduce, with some accuracy that they are simple matching up codes, with out any direct meaning. Thats my best guess at the moment. Of course, when I take my engine apart I will be able to confirm that to be the case.
