#1 Correct wiring for late Series 1 4.2 ignition switch

Post by Northwestern » Sun May 22, 2011 2:54 pm

Good afternoon everyone. My car car is a late S1 roadster which has been fitted incorrectly with an early S1 Lucas (remade) ignition switch. The early cars, 3.8s were fitted with Lucas part No. 31962 (Jaguar No. C.15454), with two terminal, one of which is a double. I've checked this on my 1962 3.8 FHC and in the 1961-1963 parts book and the switch is this one. My car should have been restored using the later 1965-68 Lucas ignition switch No. 34679 (Jaguar No. C.22258) which has four terminals, one of which is a double, making five. I've attached an image of the early switch (not sure if this link works, never done this before) with the wiring attached in the car at the moment and the later 34679 switch. The question is, where do all these wires go?! None of the terminals on either switch are numbered. The reason for the retro fit of the original switch is the remade "PoD" item is broken, no surprise. On the wiring diagrams, from what I can see, there are only 4 wires attached to the switch for the later S1's. A picture or simple instructions as how to correct this would be most appreciated. Paul

PS If this image does note appear the www.classicsailireland.com/leyc-a-class-colleen
Will take you to a page where the images are. Many thanks in advance. P.

There are various downloadable wiring diagrams here: http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1664 which should help.

Thank you David, studying one of Bill Molloy's plans now. Paul

David, thank you very much for the second link and wiring diagram which is very clear. It would appear that all the wires going into the ignition switch are live. It seems the original and correct switch are no longer available and that this poor quality remade item is all that's on offer. I wonder if this switch and jumbled wiring is the cause of my amp gauge doing an Irish jig. Regards Paul

Paul

You could give RM&J Smith or M&C Wilkinson a call and see if they have a good used or NOS ignition switch available.

David, I have the original working switch, so no problem there. Paul

Paul

As regards the ammeter being erratic the first thing to check is the connectors on the back are really clean and tight but any problem here usually involves smoke! Unless you are dedicated to originality swap it for a voltmeter which is of far more relevance with an alternator equipped car. http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=166

David

Yes, that is a very good idea. I've been thinking about ever since I had a short behind the dash and the amp gauge literally melted, it was at night on start up and the gauge glowed internally bright red before it burnt out an impressive sight. Fortunately I was able to disconnect the battery in seconds before any more damage was done. Thank you for the link. I take it the Smiths gauge is a new part and available from various classic part suppliers? Paul

Heuer, Thank you for the information on where to obtain a Smiths volt gauge. David, As a follow up to your advice and links regarding wiring the original Lucas switch it is now back in the car, correctly wired and working. The item replaced did not have the correct Lucas part number for either a 3.8 S1 or a 4.2 S1, and is numbered 30608A. Many thanks for your advice. Paul
