#1 converting s3 e type to wire wheels

Post by johnabel » Thu Aug 04, 2011 10:22 am

could someone tell me what is involved in converting a s3 1972 drop head coup? from ordinary road wheels to wire wheels. I understand that the wire wheels go onto splined shafts but I don't know how big a job it is to change to splined shafts. What parts are required and how much will it cost roughly. I want to do this but don't know if I can afford it?

Many thanks in advance for your replies.

You will need four splined hubs to suit the S3 (?400), 6" wire wheels (?1,000), tyres (?600 - ?1,000), spinners (?100) plus some ancillary bits and pieces. You may be able to offset some of the cost by selling your existing wheels/hubs and you could fit your current tyres if they are legal and less than 5 years old. Beware buying s/h hubs because if the splines are worn they will destroy your new wires (same applies to s/h wires on new hubs). The work is reasonably straight forward.
