Colour of air filter canister?

Can anyone please let me know what is the correct colour for the air filter canister on an August 1962 coupe? The original appears to have been painted black, then re-sprayed silver-grey at some stage in its life. I've checked pictures on XKE Data and the canisters are either black or silver for 1961-62 cars. My other coupe is a 1961 and is silver (I suspect it's been resprayed) and my S1 roadster is silver, but that's a 1968 car. Please help as I am ready with black or silver spray paint this afternoon!

My copy of Dr. Thomas Haddock's book shows a change occurring in October 1961, to the fibreglass plenum. The two cars used as examples show a black canister on the early car, with the canister of the later car painted silver. Period photos in other publications usually show the canister in black, and the very early (9/64) 4.2 I once owned had a black canister. My thoughts? Some cars may have escaped with silver air cleaners, but I would bet the majority were black from new.

Don't shoot me but I would say that all 3.8's were Black and even some early 4.2's.

I have pictures of the E-type production line in 65 and they appear to be black.

Harry : I'm very interested in your photos - any chance of posting one please, as like Haddock I thought the change to silver was early on , and I'd prefer black!

i too am very interested in conclusive answer here as i am restoring a 3.8 built in Nov 63 and would like to know Black or silver cannister??

Were there two makes - Coopers and AC? Maybe one was black and one was silver?

EXCUSE ME! I resemble that remark!

Angus you rascal - you're quoting me entirely out of context. In a most uncharacteristic display of modesty I said I was ...only 99,9% sure. :D

Judging by the shut panel area at the forward end of the pressings, I'd say the inner wings were XJ parts. Either that, or the ultra-rare 'Yeti' 4-door E-type, with swept back C-pillars for the rear compartment.

so if one were to paint the cannister black would it be gloss black smooth or a hammertone wrinkle black ?

Gary : I should warn you that I tried mine in gloss black instead of silver , and found that it showed up every trivial defect and as a result looked awful . The silver, on the other hand, flatters even rather shabby canisters like mine

Nothing like throwing a spanner in the works!

I'm just shot blasting the canister on my FHC chassis no 860403 from May 1962 in preparation for painting it gloss black but I have discovered that there is a coat of 'mid grey' paint which looks original - could this be a primer coat or have I discovered a third colour? the canister is AC.

I have stopped stripping it for now as it will give the paint shop a match to prepare a rattle can of the colour.
