Hi All
Does anyone know where I can get hold of rear light assemblies for a FHC series 1? Only really need the new chrome surrounds really but assume you have to buy a complete unit including seals and lenses etc- Will they fit properly if they are new items? Anyone had any experience or is it simply better to send mine off for re chroming - any ideas who to use for a quick turnaround time.

I hate reproduction stuff passionately. It is usually the wrong shape, it never fits properly, and is invariably of very poor quality and doesn?t last long. I recently took my Coupe to CMC to get it re-trimmed with a few finishing jobs. The first thing that the bodywork guy commented on was that the car had the original lights and bumpers?it is very obvious when parked next to a car with repro bits fitted.
The downside is that the light surrounds are made of Mazak, a pretty grotty alloy similar to that used to make your old Corgi cars. It doesn?t rust as such, but develops small craters or ?pits? which look unsightly. They can be re-chromed, but you will have to seek out one of the specialist chrome-platters to do it. Many won?t touch Mazak as each pit has do be cleaned out and soldered to permanently repair prior to re-plating. This can be almost as expensive as buying a new lamp, but at least it will look right and will fit.
Worth a call to some of the specialist ?classic car? chrome companies, or talk to CMC or another specialist to find out where they get their stuff done. It?s probably a winter job though?these companies aren?t known for a quick turnaround.
