#1 Registration

Post by dxke38 » Sat Mar 10, 2012 9:26 pm

Hope someone can help with an ID problem.
I've recently bought a very early 3.8 fhc resto project, it came with a v5 but on checking the DVLC tax website, it shows that the reg number is now on a 2003 Jaguar. Whats the procedure for getting a new number for the car.
regards Derek

Derek : the first thing to note is that, as far as I am aware, a number is NEVER reissued . Accordingly , you need to investigate further. The most likely thing is that your car was off the road ( or abroad) before the V5 system ever came into force in 1979 . Prior to then registration was dealt with by local taxation offices . When for whatever reason , the fact that it was still in existence came to the attention of the DVLA , probably as a result of a change of ownership , the DVLA probably recorded it on the computer as a "new" registration , and issued a V5 , which would give rise to it being on the public database as first registered in 2003 . If this is not the case, and the car its number is on really is e.g. an XJ8 , then there is a problem. If you are a member of JDC or JEC, you can usually obtain advice on this. In the case of the JEC it comes from a very helpful member called Keith Vincent - see the magazine for details

Derek....I would imagine that a previous owner of your E type liked the registration number enough to transfer it onto his 'daily car' before he sold the E on, or laid it up. In which case the number has gone.

It's very easy to get a new number. Firstly, the car needs to have a current MOT. Secondly, you will need a heritage certificate from Jaguar, stating when the car was built (from the chassis number). Supporting documentation that shows the chassis number, such as the old V5 or old MOTs, will help the process.

You also need a receipt from the previous owner, showing that you own the car. This can be overlooked if you have a lot of the original paperwork, but it may require a police check to ensure that the car isn't stolen.

Finally, you then take the car (on a trailer) and all the documentation to a main DVLA centre, where they will check the car's details against the paperwork, and issue an age-related registration number. Occasionally you don't have to take the car...again, if you have a lot of old paperwork for the car.

Another point to bear in mind is that, as far as I understand, a number cannot be legally transfered off a car without a current MOT. If your car is a long term laid up project the ID of which did not make it in to the new DVLA database by the late 1970's, then how can it lose the number formally?
As Chris says, DVLA do not knowinlgy reissue a number and even though not all records exist/survived from the local ofices, they do know what numbers where issued, not necessarily to what chassis number/ model though. The connection had to be made by the owner sending back the old log book.
If the heritage cert mentions the original number you would have a good case to approach DVLA and request a history of the number, this might show that it was transfered while the car was roadworthy, there maybe a missing continuation old log book.

Just my humble opinion!
