Hi,
I'm trying to find out what thread the captive nuts that hold the chrome trim around the headlamps are. I am missing one and don't have the screws (I bought the car to restore and the headlamp glasses had gone missing). I've finished the tub but the bonnet is proving a challenge.

As you say the bonnet has captive nuts in it and you can buy the screws from the usual suppliers. From memory I think its a 3/16 unf and about 1 inch long although you can fit longer ones. Depending on your car depends on whether the screws are slotted or crosshead. 3.8's and very early 4.2's had slotted screws. I *think* all the others had crosshead.
Replacement glass by the way is jolly expensive and I hear doesnt fit to well. But i recall that some forum members have replaced their headlamp glass with perspex which would be a tad cheaper.

Thanks for that Chris, I did get some original glass and chrome even the correct year from Heritage Jaguar Parts (had the rubber seal as well) as you say not cheap. Unfortunately my car had been in a bit of a bump before I bought it so it's taken me a while to find the missing 3 inches and return them to the bonnet. So far the tub is complete and the only new metal I've needed on the car was a bonnet under pan as this was beyond economic repair. Spent last week adding metal to the rear edge of the bonnet, now I?ve put new frames on and lined everything up the gap varied from 0 to about 30mm. Still I hope to have it painted for easter.

Hi, I asked this a while ago and the answer was 10-32 and thus unc. I took the advice given and ran a tap through the captive nuts. Saved a load of hassle and fear of stripping threads. I'm sure my previous thread will be in the history of this forum somewhere.
